The Ministry of Science and Technology of Laos and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have agreed to further extend cooperation in the development of their respective science and technology industries.
The measure was confirmed by the two parties after they held talks on Friday to discuss and exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation in a bid to boost human resources development into the future.
During the talks, the delegates of the two parties concluded a contract agreement on cooperation in the areas of science and technology.
The cooperation agreement was signed by the Lao Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Houmphanh Intharath and the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Yaping.
The two parties addressed their progress in science and technology and the challenges and opportunities they will face looking forward.
Amongst the topics discussed were botanical medicines, plant and animal research, renewable energy, environmental protection, ecological restoration, gene banks and other areas of science that both sides are interested in.
The meeting participants agreed that Laos and Kunming and Xishuangbanna have geographical similarities and so both sides should cooperate in the fields of plant and animal research and renewab le energy (including biomass, biogas, solar cells and organic fertilisers).
The conference also considered that the concerned institutes and national council offices of both sides should discuss the details of current and future cooperation in the above mentioned fields.
The Chinese delegates agreed to assist Laos in the field of human resource development, including post graduate study, training, technology transfers, exchanges of experience and expert advice for Lao officials.
The Chinese delegates will welcome the visit of senior Lao government officials early next year, but have yet to find a suitable time for both sides to take part, so to this end the Ministry of Science and Technology of Laos should send their agenda for the visit at the earliest opportunity.
When the two sides next meet, a Memorandum of Understanding on science and technology between the Lao Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences of China will be finally concluded.
The Chinese delegates agreed to assist the Lao ministry in identifying a geographical location as well as inviting the ministry to select suitable Lao candidates to apply for 2014 scholarships, saying that they will give preference to Lao candidates. Both parties will encourage and support cooperative research activities among the respective science and technology institutes.
