Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead 'set to top the charts' after Thatcher death
Oz track Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead is racing to the top of the charts after a sales boost following Margaret Thatcher’s death. Critics of the late Iron Lady, who died at 87 after a stroke on Monday, have been rushing to buy the song from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
And it has been tipped to take the No1 slot this weekend after topping Amazon’s download chart after a social media campaign to promote it for those “celebrating” the death of the former PM.
A spokeswoman for Britain’s Official Charts Company said the track – sung by Judy Garland in the film after the Wicked Witch of the West is killed – would get to No10 in the singles chart on Wednesday.
She said: “The surge in sales follows a campaign to get the track to number one.”
A Facebook group supporting the track has more than 5,000 members.
And reviewer Gareth Mark Gee, from Nottingham, wrote: “For those genuine witches, who purposely destroy the lives of others for purely ideological reasons and with not one shred of apology or a single tear, this is the perfect funeral-day track.”
