In Communist country you can do whatever as long as you don't challenge their rule or speak out about politics. Xipsongpanna is autonomy region self rule and govern. Maybe that's why they're doing well. Smiley

Half of it is right. Self-rule and govern is the name only.

peterpan, I was wondering if most people living in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Area speak Dai languages?

Like, do most people speak Tai Lue? Or just Yunnan Chinese?

I read that Tai Lue was disappearing among teenagers.

There is also Dehong Dai or Chinese Shan

In xi Shaun banana area, people speak Chinese, the mandarin. If Dai meet Dai they speak Dai, or Tai Lue modified. Among Dai teenagers, they speak Dai, that language lasts. When I was young I learned dirty words from my Dai classmates.

Dehong Dai is the same.

Speaking Dai was a must before around 1990 to buy foods which were mostly generated by Dai people.

And what about at the schools? Do they teach the students how to write the Dai alphabets? I really want to learn more about Dai language, it's very similar to Lao..How can I learn more? Can I go stay in Xishuangbanna for some time? How about Dai culture, is it still surviving?

BTW: the Xishuangbanna site is down. Check the link and you will see some insult written out

The site maybe will be energetic Monday. Maybe the site is gone.

School only teaches mandarin. Dai learn their letters at temple.  You can stay in Xi Shuan banna. Dai culture I don't know. I am not in it. But, it is prospering because Dai people now have money by natural rubber.

Are you sure that the school only teaches Mandarin? I've read online that some schools teach only Mandarin but others also teach Dai in the classes.

In many regions of China they have schools that help teach ethnic minorities in their own languages.

Also I was wondering, you aren't Dai are you? Are you just Chinese?
