I do not there is enough land area to commercially grow rice in Laos.  Too much rugged topography there and I would assume you need relatively flat land to do so.  I ain't no expert on growing rice but I guess I am dumbfounded to think so.

There is kind of what we call red moutain rice, highland rice, it fetches big money here.  Coffee can also be good, macedamia, sugar also good. Some chinese put some medicine oriented crops in Laos like Noni. very profitable.  If look at chinese market, traditonal chinese medicine crops planting can be very very profitable if Laos have reasonabel know how.  Grin

As of right now Vietnam is up there with Thailand when it comes to exporting Coffee beans and rice.As a matter of
fact they export alot of seafood too.I think while back they
bought alot of those Boeing Cargo plane cause they were making so much money.Heck the catfish farmer here had to
cry to the lawmaker.I think they wanted to change the name of the vietnamese catfish to a different name. They were flooding the market with em.I guess they can grow
em cheaper over there.

Let me guess, Xi Shuan Banna has significant ethnic-Lao population. If this is the case, how many would your estimate be?

We call it ethnic Thai, not Lao, yet, their writings ate more like laotians. Total population is around 1.13 million. As far as I know, 95% eat sticky rice, no imported from thai or Lao, it is local.

It is not a city, it is a prefecture. The major city to the border is about 60 km
