Lao Telecommunications announced on Friday that it will introduce the latest 4G (fourth generation) technology for use at the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit scheduled for November 5-6 in Vientiane. Providing speeds of up to 100 Mbps, five times faster than the current 3G, the new 4G service will be ready for the Summit.
The introduction of 4G will make Laos second among the 10 Asean member countries after Singapore to use the technology. The 4G system provides mobile ultra-broadband Internet access, for example to laptops with USB wireless modems, to Smartphones, and to other mobile devices.
The Lao government announced recently that Laos is fully prepared to host the Summit. As of Tuesday, leaders and delegates from 50 ASEM members out of 51 in total have confirmed their attendance. Of these, 14 are heads of state, 21 are heads of government, two are deputy prime ministers, 12 are ministers, and one is a deputy minister. More than 900 reporters including more than 500 from overseas will be in Vientiane to cover the Summit.
