The Wizard of Oz songstress, Judy Garland was very well educated for a girl who spent most of her life on stage and film. When not filming, she attended Hollywood Professional School and later Hollywood High School, a private educational institution for young stars in Los Angeles, but she did not enter college/university due to her heavy work commitments at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios.

As a young girl, Judy Garland enjoyed reading a variety of books including L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. Poetry was also something that she had a keen interest in reading and writing. Her favourite subject was history, particularly Russian history on the Romanov Dynasty that once ruled the country. Judy Garland had no Russian ethnic background. She also wrote an unpublished autobiography detailing aspects of her life which she never completed at her death.
