Ralph Macchio and Judy Garland were both extraodinary actors from different eras, but with similarities.
Ralph Macchio, of course played the role as "Daniel LaRusso" in The Karate Kid series during the 1980s, and who can ever forget Judy Garland as "Dorothy Gale" in The Wizard of Oz classic film way back in 1939.
Both these actors were four years older than the characters they were playing. Ralph Macchio was 21 when the first movie was made, playing a 17 year old karate kid. And Judy Garland was 16 when she starred in The Wizard of Oz, playing a 12 year old Kansas farm girl.
Not many people would have notice this because of their youthful appearance. Ralph Macchio with the boyish good looks and high pitched voice, and Judy Garland had the pretty girly looks to go with her sweet talking and singing voice.
Ralph Macchio is most remembered for introducing the crane kick in the first series, which he also performed in the second part of the movie series, and a technique that was also mentioned in the third and final part. Judy Garland, on the other hand, is most remembered for introducing
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow", a song that she will forever be connected to.
Ralph Macchio and Judy Garland were great childhood role models and heroes for millions of people. Ask anyone on the street who Lauren Bacall is, and unless they are into old Hollywood, you'll probably get many clueless answers or a wild guess. Ask the same question about Ralph Macchio and Judy Garland, and you'll be on the receiving end of wide grins about their role as Daniel in The Karate Kid and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
