I ask this is because land west of the Mekong looks much flatter because of the floodplain and floodplain has better soil for plants to grow, whereas the Laos side is more mountainous.

That's correct. That's why Thailand is the largest rice exporter in the world because of Isan. If Isan was still part of Laos we wouldn't have problem with food shortage. But sometime they do have drought and flood.

Laos is mostly mountainous and has many river. But Laos are rich in mineral resource, the river is good for hydropower.

They also force deported most of Laos population to Thailand. That's why today about 40% of Thai population is ethnics Lao. That's around 26 million.

Who knows we could over Siam as well .
