God bless you Old Man. Thank you so much for teaching Lao kids English. How much do you charge per month? If any. I think showing them English movie or cartoon is also a good way to learn.

Old Man, It's very kind and thoughtful of you to teach English to young kids in Laos, and I'm sure they feel appreciative with the work you do to help them learn some valuable English.

Lao Democratic, Yes, I remember watching The Wizard of Oz all the time when I was little, I guess that helped.

I'm semi-retired now, so I teach these village kids for free.  It would be very difficult for their parents to come up with the money to pay me a salary like I used to get working for NGOs in Vientiane.

You're kind at heart and caring. You wouldn't find many ethnic Lao people in Laos who would be willing to teach anything for free.

Your valuable lessons will help them grow and develop their language skills, and we all know that English is a very important language in the world.

I want to do something like that when I retire in Laos. Volunteer and charity work. I'm lucky and bless to have opportunity in America. But I know what's like growing up in Laos.

Larb Dip, I think the sentence is self explanatory.

Lao Democratic, When you retire, you will still have money, that's why you can work for free. It's definately different for the locals in Laos.

Man if we have some more good people like Oldman, Laos would be better and brighter place for kids that have no hope or school. May I ask where this village located? So I could tell my people to go make some school supplies donations for me and perhaps few sets of computer to assist you. I will pay for it. Real talk

Thanks for the very kind thoughts.

The village is located in a rural area 30 km. outside Vientiane.  There is a bi-lingual, printable map on the website:www.rivertimelaos.com

About computers for schoolchildren: there is an organisation called 'One laptop per child' in the U.S. www.laptop.org/ that produces attractive, cheap, durable laptops for children in poor rural areas in developing countries.  The laptops can run by wind-up clockwork without needing electricity.

If you are visiting Laos, or are able to send supplies by post, the best things to bring or send are, pencils, pens, notebooks, rulers, crayons, erasers, etc. Also sports equipment (deflated footballs, and the like).  Bringing or sending books is not a good idea as they are so heavy (therefore expensive) and most are not suitable for Lao children.  Suitable books for Lao children can be bought in the markets and shops in Vientiane and then taken to the villages/schools.  If you contact Barnaby at Rivertime (in the first link) he can help you with that.

There is also an organisation that helps travelers on holiday take supplies to children in rural areas.  It is:

Their website is: http://www.packforapurpose.org/

Have a look at the links.

Regards,

Old Man

Oh, I see you live in Boston, Laosport.

Then you are near M.I.T. They are the ones behind the One Laptop Per Child project.

Old Man thank for the link. Does they have "One laptop per child" in Laos?

For packforapurpose.org. Do you pack all those supply yourself when you visit Laos or the organized can send them for you?
