Looks like fun. I will have to check it out next time I'm on holiday.

Why does it say: '$2/hour.
One kayak available.'

I don't think it would be much fun kayaking solo.

I guess because they only have one kayak and Barnaby, the new manager, doesn't want guests to think the resort has lots of them and then be disappointed when they arrive.

If the kayak is being used, you could easily rent one of these from the many local fishermen in the area:

For a bit more money, you and your mates could probably even rent one of these:

But, whatever you do, please DO NOT.....I repeat DO NOT bring any of these to wreck the peace of our beautiful tranquil Nam Ngum river.

We don't have them yet on our river, and hopefully never will.... Smiley

However, they have found their way onto the Mekong river in Vientiane and Nong Khai.

Jet skiing on the river DOES look fun! There SHOULD be more of them in Laos!

As for wrecking 'the peace of our beautiful tranquil Nam Ngum river', I don't thik they're that loud anyway. Perhaps you're referring to the possible over crowding that comes along with it. Maybe you just want to hog it al to yourself. Tongue

I had a feeling you'd be the sort that likes things like jet skis.... Wink

I have bad memories of them.  I had a scuba dive shop in Phuket, Thailand many years ago.  Out trainee divers would learn scuba by diving in the sea near our restaurant.  So jet skis were a danger.  Never mind - to counter the danger my partner put up a buoy with a 'diving' flag above where the divers were.

Bad move!... Huh

That just made the jet ski teenagers notice the flag and head straight towards it and start doing wheelies around it nearly cutting off the heads of our trainee divers.... Shocked

Only people in the scuba diving community know what a 'divers here' flag looks like anyway.... Roll Eyes

I don't think diving in the Mekong's murky waters appeals to me. The jet skiing however, sounds real fun. There's nothing to do in Laos BUT have fun. Am I right?

How do you spend your days by the way? I really am curious.
I'm assuming you have a routine. I already know that you log on at about 0500. Local time.

You must really enjoy the quiet life, don't you? To give up all that 'action' over the river, speaks volumes. Maybe it's just age. YOU tell me Old Man. Wink

That might be a good business idea in Laos. Jet ski, pontoon boat and tubing, ski boat rentals.
Shocked

I'm with you Old Man. The quiet life for me also. I miss my home in the country. I sold it after my 2nd wife got the kids in the divorce and moved to another state. To painful to live in such a large house by myself. Oh yea, she took the dog too. I'm not bitter though, if it weren't for her, I would have never met my lovely and caring wife, Keo.

I'm amazed about jet skiers not knowing about diving flags...seems to me that people who like jet skiing would also like scuba diving, surfing, etc.

When I got my keelboat sailing license the test asked you to identify different symbols...dive flags were on there.

Also Larb Dip, a lot of backpackers go to Vang Vieng where they float down the river on tubes while drinking beer and other interesting concoctions. I can't say I was too impressed with the people I saw wearing Vang Vieng tubing shirts though.

I thought of suggesting a jet ski business to Larb Dip since he said he wanted to be a 'pioneer'.  Just please don't do it on our bit of river!

I'm sure most of the people don't know what a dive flag looks like.

Here is one for your information.
