Fish and sticky rice goes well with it.

Every time I burn my mouth with chili, the elders tell me not to drink water because it just makes it worst.

After eating tum mak hung drink soda. You'll keep running to the bathroom if you drink water.

As Dorthy would say, "Oh my!"

I never thought of Montezuma's Revenge. I better pack a small med kit with some Imodium, Theraflu and the like. Thank you! It could have really put a damper on our trip.

Don't worry about me practicing with the chilies. When you marry a Lao woman who loves to cook, I guess that comes with the territory.

It's a unique dish that makes your mouth water, just by thinking about it.

Why, when Lao women are making papaya salad look at me and say "Papaya pok pok", do they always break out in a giggle?

Does it have some comic meaning? Undecided

Haha, my students in Thailand do the same thing. Sometimes they also say 'sep baw?' if they see me eating som tam. That bugs me a bit since they're really making fun of me.

Make sure you go to a travel doctor, they should be able to give you a prescription for antibiotics, so if you do get sick just start popping antibiotics for a few days and you'll feel better. Also you can get pills for immunization against typhoid Cheesy. Fun times...

Depends on who's mouths those statements are coming out of. If from a Siamese then it could have SACRCASTIC lilt to it. However, if the query comes from a Lao or Isaan, then they may actually want to know if their cooking really is 'sep baw'? Wink

I have never heard of a travel doctor. Is there such a thing here in the states? Or do I go see one in Laos?

She likes to put in 5 or 6 Thai chilies, but I asked her to only put in 4 for me. I can not eat it that hot yet.

We had papaya salad, with fish, sticky rice, and a banana  for desert. Also water, for me the water was a MUST.

The best salad ever!  I make it nearly every weekend whenever I bbq some pork ribs or beef steak. Smiley  I used to put in 10-15 chilies now I can only handle 6, getting older I guess. Smiley
