As I understand it, Laos businesses, Laos government wants as many foreign educated Laotians to go back and help develope the country. FINE GOOD IDEA, GOOD PLAN.. I AGREE!

PROBLEM - Laos government/businesses don't want to or can't afford to pay EQUIVALENT SALARIES!

THAT'S A FACT!

IF you're an engineer in USA/England/France or whereever and you make $70,000 for example.. don't expect to get the same in Laos!  They want your education and experience but NOT willing to pay you for it!

It's unfortunate!   Lips Sealed

If you're a Lao foreigner, the foreign company will be paying you so you will be earning a high wage, and possibly with other benefits.

If you change your citizenship to Lao, then understandly you will be earning the same as a local engineer. But the Lao government doesn't expect you to change your citizenship, they just require some educated people to work at some Embassy, Red Cross or similar.

That's good to know. Dont change citizens and get pay more. Depend on jobs and education. I think around $500 a month is not bad. If you retire from other country. You already have extra income from 401k or pension, social security.

Yes they can't pay 70k a year. Its a great idea that government want to encourage expats to move back. Work and open small business as side jobs for extra income. Cost of living is also cheaper in Laos.

$500 a month is fine for a retiree, but not much for a young foreigner who wants to build on their life.

If you want decent pay while working in Laos, then the bottom line is, you must work in areas where overseas companies or governments will pay you.

When it come money it's never enough. You make more you spend more. I'll be happy with $1,000 a month. Let say my house and car is pay for in Laos and no bills.

I'm not very good in math. Engineer in America make about $40,000-$70,000 a year or more. Depend on jobs experience and education.

well of course my foreign company better be paying me the same high salary i would be getting if i lived in usa. in fact, they will have to pay my visa renewal fees and health insurance in thailand because no way would i rely on hospital in lao.

but BorLeumBanGerd was making the point that the lao government will never match salary for a lao professional job as compare to in foreign land. i am agreeing even if the lao government could afford to pay as much, they won't. why bother when the need isn't there yet.. when low pay will still get the job done, just slower and not as good quality, but still there.

They should pay foreign and expats more then locals worker because they have  degree from other country like US, EU, Australia or Japan. Education in foreign is better and very expensive.

Lao Lan Xang, It varies because teacher salaries in Laos are mainly determined by their qualification, years of experience and function performed (type of teacher and level).

Primary teachers earn around 600,000 kip ($70 US) per month these days.

Wow only make $10 more then lady that clean the street.  I hope the government fund more education, and pay teacher more to encourage more people into the teaching fields. I know they can pay more. Education and children is our future and hope.
