USA Joe, Seafood dishes are expensive in Laos, as you would expect since Laos has no access to sea so businesses need to import from other countries, then raise their prices to consumers in order to make some profit.

LaoguySoCal, With food, you need drinks too. Enjoy your Lao trip in a couple of months.

What a lonely guy, no food to go with the drink too, no wonder he can't even smile for the pics.
By the way, you guys have it so good in US and Laos and still complain, look at the rip off in Australia, a bowl of beef noodle soup (half the size of the one in US but 1.5 the size in Laos) cost AUS $9.50, all U can eat seefood cost around $60 (midium range) and you only get 1/3 variety that in US restaurants, don't complain but go around and you'll find out how lucky you guys are (that's why most of you are over weight and need a triple bypass at the age of 50).
Then again don't feel sorry for us in Australia, because you guys have to work 3 times as hard for the money, we're really a lazy bunch down under, that's why everything is so expensive here.

uh oh - i was told prawns were a favorite among my lao/hmong friends. so should i expect a $500+ bill for 20-25 people?


Prawns are certainly a favourite for the locals....

I think I paid 500,000 kip/ $60 US, for 2 falung and 6 or 7 locals. But that included a lot of Beer Lao, unfortunatly served by a very femine male and not one of those lovely BeerLao girls.

There's also some floating restaurant's near a bridge heading North out of town. Good place to practice catching live prawns or grasshoppers with chopsticks for your lunch!!
