Laos on National Geographics
11th Jul, 2010 at 5:56pm

Did anyone watch National Geographics, they did a show on Laos the other day. I didn't get a chance to watch it since I was travelling. I wonder if they showed anything interesting. Perhaps they showed some Laos women being bought and sold or maybe the corruption, illegal logging, poaching, child poverty, UXO, and maybe they only showed the good things like the markets, mercedes/bmw's driving around on dirt roads, palaces with marble floors next to straw huts, university school girls with paid diploma's, monks with cell phones calling their mistresses, and beer Lao everywhere. Got to love that Beer Lao, makes people smarter and gives the country a good image.

I guess I don't really need to watch it on tv, I'll be there later this year anyways.

Some Hmong-Lao American are pretty anti-Commies and Laos government. Most Hmong speak Lao and Thai.

There's not that many Miao in NZ. From what I've seen so far, with a rag, they strap their children on like backpacks when taking a stroll to the local parks. Do they do the same in the USA? They are recent arrivals by the way and haven't had time to adjust to a western standard.

I didn't know there're Hmong-Lao living in New Zealand. In America Hmong population is around 150,000. New Hmong generation are Americanized and don't have connection with Laos.

That's enough to rival Lao. IS there any rivalry going on over in the USA between Lao and Hmong?

There's no rivalry here.  Everyone's working together in the community where I live.  I don't know about anywhere else.  I haven't heard anything negative in the media about Miao/Lao/Yao.  Remember we are all descendants of China, please don't be offended.  This is our true identity.

I don't think there's any rivalry here. There're endless opportunity in the US. Many Hmong-Lao are doing well in the states with business, jobs and  education. But I don't think most Lao and Hmong really associated with one another. Everybody is doing their own thing different celebration, new year, holiday and so on.
