Yes, 5'4" is the average height for guys in Laos. And the average height for girls is probably 5'2".

Well, I'm 5'4" which means that I'm about the same height as many guys and girls in Laos, if not taller than most of them, so I'm very surprised at being called short.

Maybe because of the weather, lack of vitamin and proteins. That's why some people in Lao, Asian country are short. Some Lao-American, Asian-American kids are pretty tall. About 5'8", 5'9" or taller.

Only the older generation calls me "nang" in Laos, I've never had a young guy call me "nang" before.

Young guys who don't know me will call me "nong sao" or "eay" depending how old they are.

So you can't just go around calling any girl "nang".
