Title: Exact reproduction of Judy Garland's gingham pinafore dress 1939 Post by Admin Saovaluck on 13th Jan, 2015 at 1:02pm
This is an exact reproduction of Judy Garland as Dorothy's iconic blue-and-white checked gingham pinafore dress, made by the lovely Miss MaryAnne.
Work is still in progress and it's not finished yet, but this dress will soon link up with Judy Garland's ruby slippers. These are some of the best and highest quality old Hollywood costumes connected with Miss Garland you'll ever see. The belt clinches in to show her waist, and the top of the dress is a bit wider to make room for her bust. There's a hidden pocket on the right side seam of the dress to store her handkerchief for crying scenes in The Wizard of Oz, and there's also a separate white underskirt like the originals to give her dress some bounce and volume. Judy Garland as Dorothy's gingham pinafore dress wouldn't be complete without a white petticoat slip.
This garment under the dress is custom-made from cotton muslin, and is visible throughout the movie. Petticoat slip underneath Dorothy's gingham pinafore dress Please click on image to view a larger version |

Our stunning dress is finished and more detailed photos later, but this is a Miss MaryAnne reproduction of the iconic blue and white gingham pinafore dress over a white puffy-sleeved blouse, as worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
This is the kind of dress made for a princess such is its beauty. A very vintage appeal of Dorothy's dress that is one of, if not the most well known outfit in movie history. Judy Garland as Dorothy's gingham pinafore dress Please click on image to view a larger version |

This beautiful dress as worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, is the most accurate reproduction you will ever see, paying careful attention to detail.
Made exactly in Judy Garland's measurements, her dress also has important features such as a hidden right pocket, and closing at the back with vintage "hook and eyes", as well as vintage buttons on the belt. This is the kind of 1930's style dress that you need help to wear it because you can't close the back of the white blouse and dress on your own. The blouse is very sheer and delicate like the originals, so we always handle it with care. It's so fine that you can see through it to the corset that MGM Studios made Judy Garland wear to keep her breasts down flat. They say pretty girls look good in anything, and wowee Judy Garland is certainly one. She was born to wear this stunning gown. Exact recreation of the dress as worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy |

Judy Garland as Dorothy's blue-and-white cotton gingham pinafore dress and blouse. Very cute teen dress made to fit her perfectly.
Detailed exactly like the original dress Judy Garland as Dorothy wore in the movie, the collar and sleeves are detailed with blue rickrack. This dress is for display and it is not available for sale. We will take some photos with the ruby slippers before the slippers head off to their new home in America at the end of March. At the back of the dress consists of old fashion hook and eye closures like the originals.
Judy Garland as Dorothy wore a corset under the shirt, and that's the only piece missing from our display. We need to purchase it in her size. Back of Judy Garland as Dorothy's gingham pinafore dress Please click on image to view a larger version Please click on image to view a larger version |

We have a beautiful corset that fits Judy Garland as Dorothy perfectly. This garment will be included as part of her dress.
MGM Studios made Judy Garland wear a corset for her role as Dorothy which covers her from the bust to hip, intended to give her the perfect childlike figure. Corset as worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy Please click on image to view a larger version Please click on image to view a larger version |

We have attached a white corset to Judy Garland as Dorothy's dress. You can see the top part of the corset through her thin blouse, just like in the movie.
This dress is beautiful and that completes the costume set, however MaryAnne will make some minor adjustments. Corset under Judy Garland as Dorothy's Wizard of Oz dress Please click on image to view a larger version |

Another look at a copy of the most beautiful and iconic dress that Judy Garland wore in her lead role as Dorothy.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't look at this dress, just love Judy Garland and love anything associated with her. This isn't the final dress because top costume maker in MaryAnne will do a bit of tweaking to make the dress look even better. I apologize for the lack of updates on this thread, I haven't abandoned it and I'm sure people have been waiting patiently to see the new Dorothy dress.
It will still be made, but in mid 2016 because the costume maker has been very busy with her new home. The good news is that she is still committed to getting the job done, I will provide further updates if there's any changes to the middle of the year schedule. |

We now own two beautiful gingham pinafore dress and blouse. The first dress is on a mannequin, and our new dress is on a white clothes hanger which is why it looks a bit awkward.
MaryAnne did a wonderful job with both dresses, we appreciate everything she's done but since it took her a while to make the second dress she forgot to fix something that we requested so unfortunately we are back to square one. The petticoat slip and blouse is right but the actual gingham dress is a bit off and we need to fix some minor issues with it. We are perfectionists when it comes to the costume worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy and that reflects on the way we craft our ruby slippers. We have decided to make the appropriate changes to the dress on the white clothes hanger ourselves, we feel this is the only way we will be happy. We have the base dress and a sewing machine and we need to order the fabric. We just have to find time to work on the dress and that's the problem because we are behind schedule with our ruby slippers, so the dress will need to be put aside. Below is a before and after photo of one of our dresses that we fixed.
The width of the strip on the belt is larger, and we moved the pointy end of the shoulder straps just below the belt slightly like the original dress. This is an exact reproduction of Judy Garland's dress in her size with the hidden right pocket for her handkerchief and see-through white blouse. Underneath the dress is a white slip to give the dress some spread like we see throughout The Wizard of Oz movie. We didn't include the corset. Perfection matters to us and we will get better with more practice. Keep an eye out for some new Dorothy gingham dresses in the near future. this was really fun to read and see the different versons of the dress, i've heard of the corset they made her wear, during filming and honestly i think its unnecessary, but your dresses are perfect, you can't even tell them apart from the original.

The corset is necessary because the blouse is see-through, you don't want to see her cleavage.
The materials we used are the same for the gingham dress and blouse but we know what we need to do in order to make future dresses perfect. Even small minor details matters, that's why we are very good costume makers and ruby slipper makers. |

oh true i didn't think of that, with the corset and all, but the design of the dress is stunning nonetheless.

Back in those days, corsets were commonly worn with dresses like these.
Yeah, unless MGM made the blouse with thicker fabric, you could see what is under there. [smiley=happy.gif] Other costume makers these days don't use the same thin fabric as the original blouse, which is why our blouse and dress is 100% accurate to the original dress as worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy. I love the Dorothy dress. The dress is absolutely beautiful, the blue and white checks make the dress stand out. |

yeah i get the corset thing now but making her look young with that type of amazing voice was odd to me, Judy didn't like it either

Title: Re: Exact reproduction of Judy Garland's gingham pinafore dress 1939 Post by Admin Saovaluck on 9th Jun, 2017 at 10:35am
She had to look a few years younger than her actual age otherwise she wouldn't have got the part of Dorothy, which she desperately wanted.
Sometimes these things happen in Hollywood movies. Ralph Macchio playing a younger Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid series in the 80's is an example. He was already in his 20's in the first series when he played as a "kid". |
Title: Re: Exact reproduction of Judy Garland's gingham pinafore dress 1939 Post by orcarifter on 10th Jun, 2017 at 3:13am
i understand, that must have been why MGM wanted Shirley Temple as the first choice.

Title: Re: Exact reproduction of Judy Garland's gingham pinafore dress 1939 Post by Admin Saovaluck on 10th Jun, 2017 at 4:44am
Shirley Temple had the young age on her side but she would have been a disaster for The Wizard of Oz.
At the end of the day, they wanted someone who could sing and Judy Garland had the voice. She showed her acting talents and singing abilities in prior movies so she was already a star on the rise. She was so right for the part of Dorothy. |

yeah, Shirley was pretty good, but Judy garland was a better talent in my opinion, she was pretty much perfect for the role.
