Title: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Admin Saovaluck on 22nd Mar, 2013 at 5:26am
Homes are located very close to the road in Laos, even on highways where cars and trucks often drive over 100km per hour (60mph). Not only is it dangerous, but it can also be very noisy at night.
Accidents and fatalities are common in Laos because everyone shares the same road. There have also been instances of vehicles crashing into homes. People living in small villages traveling on bicycles and motorbikes to school or work are always in danger of a speeding vehicle. My relative got killed on a highway in 2011 while riding back home to have lunch. [list bull-redball] Please click on image to view a larger version Please click on image to view a larger version |

It's a road in northern Laos on the way to Xieng Khouang according to our photographer.

Title: Re: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Mighty Lao Lan Xang on 23rd Mar, 2013 at 11:06pm
Very nice road though. But it kind of dangerous kids and people might walk around. Drivers might lose control of their car. Officials should set regulation on how close the house can be by the road.
|
Title: Re: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Mighty Lao Lan Xang on 23rd Mar, 2013 at 11:11pm
In the US you need permit from the city when you're trying to build or fixed your house. :)

Title: Re: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Animist on 24th Mar, 2013 at 2:29am
Very sorry to hear about your relative.
That is a nice road. Are their lower speed zones in residential areas? So true about the permissions to build homes and other structures near the roads or highways where there are distant limitations to build from roads or highways. Well folks are not really in compliance with laws to build yet I assume? If there are such laws then none of those laws are being enforce because those homes are right next to the highway in this case. |
Title: Re: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Admin Saovaluck on 24th Mar, 2013 at 6:22am
Yes there are lower speed zones in residential areas but not enforced. You won't get pulled over by the police for speeding.
Homes right in front of the highway are there because it's good for business. It's easy for people to find you and stop by, particularly travellers on the road. |

Yes they ride both. Patrol car..for them to go somewhere to set up road block (opportunities)...motorbike (government owned) for them to chase after traffic offender (opportunities) and at finally 2 personal registered car at home, 1 to go for some booze at night and the other 1 for his wife to go shopping so that the wife won't get sun burned... :P

Yes tanned is good...but not in Laos. Every now and then, you can see whitening lotion, cream or whatever collagen kind of things....as long as it can get you with whitening effect...the market is there for you to explore - SALES.

Title: Re: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Admin Saovaluck on 4th Apr, 2013 at 6:29am
I am not sure what town but it is the road from Vientiane to Pakse.
According to the sign, there's 185km remaining until you reach Pakse so it's a southern Laos town. |

My sincere condolences for you lost .I’m agreed that Government should take a strict regulation of the distance that the houses should be constructed from the highway but I don’t think this is the source of the problem that leads to tragic accidents. I’ve been in several countries and I could say from my point of view that Laotian people they don’t tent racing or going over speed, usually all the accidents happens due to the lake of transit regulation control, just to put some examples :
- Children around age of 11-16 driving a motorbike -Adults driving a car without driver license on the street. -Woman and Man speaking on the phone when driving on the road -etc… Mainly these are cause of accidents which I think the Transportation Authority Police should take a strong measure to make people obey the transit law. |
Title: Re: Homes close to highways in Laos Post by Admin Saovaluck on 9th Apr, 2013 at 4:49pm
There is no law in Laos.
Not just about driving but everything else too. Most crimes go unsolved, I know a girl who got shot in the head a couple of years ago and her parents received nothing because no one has taken responsibility, and no one was ever caught. The Lao New Year is days away, and many kids will be riding motorbikes. It's the holiday road danger period again. |

I don't know about they coming to your house and trying to bribe you for money. But 3 tourist in Minnsota did disappear. Problem with Laos is the monthly salary is low. So they have to do side jobs or anything to make extra money to feed the their family.

The situation in Laos is not good but we can't speak out. |

It's not just about politics. You can be fighting over land, or you can do something that upsets the locals. If they don't like you, they can make trouble and call the police to come and arrest you. This is what Laos is like as a communist country. You don't necessarily need to talk about politics, you can still be arrested and disappear for other reasons. |

You're right. Russia, China, Vietnam, Cuba back Laos during Laos civil War.
In Thailand most ethnics Chinese live in Bangkok. About 70% around 7 million out of 11 million total population in Bangkok are Chinese or mixed. They control the wealth, economies, government and military. Most or all of the Thai prime minister mixed Chinese. It been like that for the past 200-300 year. |

70% ? so larg population? I doubt it. But, I do have some thai friends whose grand grand parents lived in China. They think they are Thai, not Chinese. Russia, China, Vietnam, Lao, Cuba, we call each other brothers, Russia is the big bro. Now, we call each other comrade.

In the past, some English and French dudes and dudettes drew lines, created land spaces and then stick certain numbers and certain types of folks into each land space.
I do not think it really matters if you are Thai, Chinese or Vietamese living in Laos because we (Asians) are linked to the past. However, all citizens and foreigners should abide to all laws and regulations and Lao government shoud be highly aggressive in enforcing them to arrive with a more orderly society known as the 1st world! |
