The city is entirely surrounded by mountains?

Yes, and the further north you go, the scenery becomes more mountainous.

Aha..I see now why the town is very attractive to 'backpackers'-mountains, rivers and etc.... How's the mountain view in Vientaine?

Vang Vieng is very popular among foreigners and I've been there once to go hiking but it's not my cup of tea. I prefer the non-tourist areas when traveling outside of the states.

Vientiane is pretty flat compared to the mountainous terrain of northern Laos. |

Vang Vieng is popular among the locals too. Aside from the tubing and nightlife scene, the town has natural areas to explore and relax. Tourists are pretty much everywhere in Laos these days so it's hard to keep them away from your sight, unless you want to travel to the really remote places. |

That makes perfect sense because Vientaine is built on the depositional environment of the Mekong River floodplain system.

No bombs in the Vieng Vang perimeter?

I haven't heard of any unexploded cluster bombs in Vang Vieng.

True. Tourist are everywhere except for the rural areas where I prefer to spend much of my time. I like exploring the countryside and villages. |

Fair enough. The cost of living is cheaper in the countryside too.

Can you go visit my parent's ex-property? This property is about 2 hours north of Pakse along Route 13. YOu would not miss it because it is next to a Temple in the jungle.
