Let's get dalunks... favorite Laos past time, anytime.
Drink till dawn and then continue after wake up. Half a case of beer lao costed me only 48,000 kips (~$5 USD). That's six bottles, no wonder they drink it like water. |
Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Admin Saovaluck on 19th Apr, 2012 at 6:00am
Actually 1 US dollar is only worth just under 8,000 kip these days, so it cost you $6 USD.
Lao people are very good drinkers, it will take a fair amount to get them drunk. |

Admin, where's your beer lao shirt? You seem to be good at this beer stuff. I think my favorite girl was the heineken girl, dressed in green and white at the dat seen restaurant which has been there since the last time I went to Laos. She will only pour it if you buy Heineken so I drank a bottle mixed with beer lao, haha. I also had to drink the old school way, one cup and pass it around. Good thing I was already drunk so I didn't care what I drank from. Laos people like to drink their beer lao with ice, keeps it colder cause it's so hot there. I'd prefer to drink coconut juice actually but beer lao was more available and if you don't drink with them, they will not be your friends, haha.

How much do these girls get paid, is it really a good job? Maybe they failed the model tryouts and the second choice is to be a beer girl. I noticed in Laos that there is a big emphasis on these types of competitions such as beer girls, miss Laos, miss ETL, miss university of Laos, miss so and so... I guess it helps the girls with their careers. The new one is going to be miss Lao Airlines, which I did take from Bangkok to Vientiane. The flight attendants were all wearing 'sin'.

It's a hard job because you have to stand for hours, and customers drink alcohol at night so it's an evening job. They pay on a monthly basis, and deduct some amount from your salary if you miss days due to illness or other reasons, so 600,000 - 800,000 kips per month is the norm.
True, there's "Miss this" and "Miss that" in Laos every year. Next there will be Miss school cleaner. It's a distraction and meaningless. You don't see universities and colleges in America, Canada, Australia, the UK, and many other countries have beauty competitions at their school. The emphasis should be for students to get their education. Nice to see you answer every question even almost a year later, hehe.
Hey do you have any pictures from the miss lao contest recently. I heard a half lao half white girl (russian) won this year. I heard she got a car and some money also. I would like to know how these things are judged, there should be some voting from everyone in laos such as txt vote also. How do you get to be a contestant in miss lao? |
Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Admin Saovaluck on 29th Dec, 2012 at 11:00am
8 months later. I haven't checked this thread in a while, so I didn't know there was a question.
Christina Lasasimma is a teenager and she is definitely mixed, they are generally more beautiful than a typical Lao girl. You can enter or be choosen to participate. She won all sorts of prizes below: [list bull-redball] |
Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Buk Hoo Kee on 29th Dec, 2012 at 11:43am
Damn, all that for winning a miss laos contest, I wish I could enter. So you are saying a mixed girl is more beautiful than a real Lao girl, hmm. Sounds kind of contradictory for a miss Laos contest where the goal is to show how beautiful Lao women are. I guess I couldn't think of anything less from such a contest, I'm suprised one of the prizes wasn't a year's supply of whitening cream.

Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Admin Saovaluck on 29th Dec, 2012 at 12:02pm
Technically she is still Lao, just not a pure Lao.

Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Admin Saovaluck on 30th Dec, 2012 at 2:59am
I don't care so much about the beauty contest because it is just a farce that serves the interests of sponsors and organisers.
Most winners are generally Vientianians. Last years winner was also a resident of Vientiane too, with the odd winner coming from the northern region. If you're from Pakse or Champassak, you enter the competition as an outside chance of winning. |

"All we know was the next morning, one woke up and the other never did," his friend, who wished to remain anonymous, said. He said Mr Scriven, a former employee of Darwin company Work Boats Northern Australia, enjoyed travelling and had recently returned from a trip to Bali. "He was a really sort of happy, friendly guy," he said. "A real Aussie larrikin." A spokeswoman from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that a man had been found dead. "We are aware of the death of a 40-year-old Australian man in Laos and are providing consular assistance to his family in Australia," she said. |

Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Buk Hoo Kee on 3rd Mar, 2013 at 10:56pm
Let's take a look at history for a lesson. In North America when the "white man" came and brought alcohol to the native indians, it destroyed their way of life. They would trade furs for alcohol at first, then they would trade their land and eventually their women for alcohol.
I have never seen a beer company that was owned and supported by a gov't until BeerLao. Most gov'ts try to control alcohol consumption but in Laos, they promote it like a religion. Good to see that money out weighs common sense in some parts of the world. In Canada, alcohol and tobacco are taxed heavily to increase the price to make it unaffordable so that people will not use it since it causes health problems in the future which leads to increased costs to the healthcare system. I think that MADD (mothers against drinking and driving) would probably have an issue with the gov't if they owned and promoted beer drinking over here, and then the gov'ts would be sued when someone dies from an alcohol related death, similar to the tobacco industry. But we love BeerLao, so drink it up my fellow Lao brothers and sisters, drink it till we end up stupid. |
Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by sakyant on 4th Mar, 2013 at 4:17am
Attitudes in the United States are more complicated regarding alcohol than they are in Asian countries. Much of the American attitude towards alcohol (and sex and other social issues) were framed by the colonists who came here.
For example, Americans are taught about the “Protestant (or Puritan) work ethic” that supposedly pushes them to be ambitious, inventive and determined. But it also affects attitudes towards alcohol. The Puritans weren’t non-drinkers, but they definitely watched people’s behavior, and drinking too much was a sign of personal failure (and possibly damnation – literally). The original 13 colonies limited alcohol consumption and purchase through “blue laws” which prohibited its sale on Sundays in many places and also limited where it could be bought and sold. Many East Coast and Midwest states retain these laws, including Minnesota where I was born. This later influenced religious revival movements which frowned on drinking, such as the Second Great Awakening of the early 19th century. Alcohol was regarded as a social evil that caused men to beat their wives and children as well as squander the family’s money. Temperance and later prohibition were the results of this thinking. I can’t say whether this thinking would affect Canada, but it permeates much of the US where there are still hundreds of local governments that limit alcohol purchase (so-called “dry counties”). Asian countries didn’t have this Protestant baggage to contend with. |

Again both of you have a valid point. When a goverment is in the business of making money instead of governing you have some serious issue. I think rule and regulation are set up for fair and competitive business. But if you were the one making the rules. How could anyone compete ? It all come down to check and balance. But then again if you have a one party system we all know who the winner is.

Drinking and driving is morally wrong, and I don't think any society will accept that.
You may not be drunk while driving, but drinking can eventually cause you to become drunk or have blurred vision while you're still driving. |
Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Anole on 9th Mar, 2013 at 2:17am
Yes and have a highly valid point and actually there is a law here that says 'no open can or bottle while driving'. My whole point is do not drive if you are under the influence and being in this state of condition will impair your driving decisions. But I think (and if your really need to) you can pop just one top and drive if you have no alcohol in your sytem yet. One bottle/can of beer in your system does not make you drunk. Personally myself I probably need 6 or 7 bottles to become impaired :D.

Small amounts of beer can have an effect on some people's ability to drive. If you have a glass of water or orange juice, usually you feel that's enough in your system. Beer is dry and keeps you thirsty, that's why people in general don't stop with one bottle/can of beer and they continue to drink more and more. |
Title: Re: When you're drunk, you're drunk Post by Anole on 9th Mar, 2013 at 4:35am
Come on now :D. You can probably drink one whole bottle of beer like water and not buzzing at all. But when you put in additional 3 or 4 then silliness kicks in :D. Another 3 or bottles then you are Superman or Superwoman ;D.
But seriously though anyone can have an one open can and drive to your next destination. Admin Saovaluck wrote on 9th Mar, 2013 at 3:47am:
