Title: Lao language disappearing in Laos
Post by Admin Saovaluck on 6th Mar, 2012 at 12:18pm
As more Thai people enter Laos and Thai media dominates Laos, Lao language is increasingly being influenced by Thai language, and the Lao vocabulary is slowly but surely disappearing in Laos. The following are a few examples:

Fried rice

Common Lao word used in the past = "Kaow Kua"
Common Lao word used these days = "Kaow Putt"

Beautiful

Common Lao word used in the past = "Poo Ngam"
Common Lao word used these days = "Nah Huck"

Handsome

Common Lao word used in the past = "Jaow Soo"
Common Lao word used these days = "Lor"

what about all the Lao words the use?

Words like "ngin" and "ngarm" are in their movies and in their news. I even heard some say "khop jai".

We still say "khop jai", but we tend to make Thai language the superior language when we communicate with Thais and other foreign tourists in Laos.

You're missing the point: they steal our words too. Why don't you bring that up.

As soon as Lao people start saying "khop khun", then that's it.

You're missing the point. We use their language more than they use ours.

You don't see the locals in New Zealand speak in Japanese to Japanese tourists.

Why do we have to speak in Thai all the time in our own country?

similar crisis is occuring in the hmong community in the u.s of A. often hmong highschool students RIGHT NOW speak so little hmong that when they do speak i dont even understand what the hell they just said. hmonglish they call it hahaha

We have to blame their parents for that. If they speak Hmong to their children at home on a regular basis then that's how they learn and memorize new words and its meaning.

They'll never learn Hmong at school because everybody speaks English, so it comes down to parents and how they raise their children at home.

Hmong become more and more Americanized.

Lao/Thai language are very similar. Maybe some Lao want to show respected. When I was in Thai airport. They try to speak Lao to us. When they know we're from Laos :)

It's not that similar, if it is then most Thai people in Bangkok would surely understand Lao language.

Most people who work in a Thai Airport are Issan people, so they know a bit of Lao.

Thai Bangkok should understand Lao. But most Lao understand Thai and read Thai. My brother teach himself how to read Thai :)

Title: Re: Lao language disappearing in Laos
Post by Admin Saovaluck on 30th Mar, 2012 at 10:53am
Basically, it means "cute face".

Title: Re: Lao language disappearing in Laos
Post by Danglao on 30th Mar, 2012 at 11:10am
;D oh lol, like loveable face ... a face only mother could love rofl.  I was so confused.  Can you explain the other one for handsome? jaow soo and Lor.

Title: Re: Lao language disappearing in Laos
Post by Admin Saovaluck on 30th Mar, 2012 at 11:37am
Yes, "lovable face" is a more accurate meaning.

"Ror" is a Thai word meaning handsome. Lao people copy them by saying "lor".

Maybe the folks who designed the school billboard ought to get some English lessons themselves.

Perhaps you should join them for some English lessons.

"Brigter" isn't a word. It should be "brighter".

Admin, maybe he likes his future to be Brigter.
Every language changes. Do you think there was a word for internet before it was invented? What is the Laos word for it then? We can't help but be influenced, we are influenced by other cultures just like they are influenced by us Laos people. If you guys ever watch the cartoon they show on american tv called "king of the hill", there's a Laos family on that show which was based on a real Laos family.

http://kingofthehill.wikia.com/wiki/Kahn_Souphanousinphone

Kohng Koy Kahn Soupanousinphone (Born March 19,1961) Age 50 is an antagonistic neighbor on the animated series King of the Hill. He and his wife Minh and his daughter Connie live next door to the Hills. Kahn works in the Information Technology industry as a system analyst. He originates from Luang Prabang, Laos, from which he moved to Anaheim, California temporarily, but left due to "neighbor problems" as told by Minh. He attends the Nine-Rivers Country Club, and is known to suck-up to the owner of the Country Club. Kahn has a love-hate relationship with his Rainey Street neighbors, often insulting them, and other times showing kindness.

There's no Lao word for "internet", glad you mentioned it. The locals generally say "net" for internet and "com" for computer.

I don't watch cartoons.

i've been learning thai for about 2 years and notice great similarities between them and laotian..

hence decided to pick up laotian too!!

Do u mind me asking? Do u stay in Laos?
