Long story short, we were in a motorcycle accident today - luckily nobody was seriously injured but there are some details to sort out. The owners of the guesthouse we are staying at have helped us out a lot by being our translators and helping us know what is the culturally correct thing to do for the Lao person who was injured.

Anyway, without getting into details, we would like to somehow show our appreciation for their help and a gift of some kind seems appropriate. Any ideas?

I'm glad it wasn't a serious accident.

Put some money in an envelope and give them that as a gift, the minimum you should give the family is $100.

Alternatively, you can buy them an electrical good such as a fridge, TV, DVD player, laptop or iPad if you have a bit of money but I guess if they run a guesthouse then they probably have some of these.

A bottle of whiskey or wine from a foreign country is a perfect gift for men if they drink alcohol.

I knew that money in an envelope was a common gift in many Asian countries, but I wasn't sure about Laos!
