Hmm... I fit perfectly into this low class trash system. Any pics of high class folks?

Most of the Lao-Americans that I know would fit in this category. I'm not including myself into this group since I'm not Lao.

Mrlao4Ever, There will be many pictures of the high and low class Lao folks during the remainder of the year. Boun That Luang is also around the corner so stayed tuned.
Hankido, So I guess most Lao-Americans party this way too. |

Most Lao American like to party like this. Birthday party and get together. "Work hard play hard." It would be nice if most Lao people in Laos are middle income like American.

For fun in southeast Texas, me and my buddies purchase a keg of beer, campout and go gigging throughout the night. Whatever we gig is our breakfast and lunch the next day ;).
How about you Admin? Tell us more of what you normally do for fun in Vientiane? |

I attend parties once in a while, but no beer and cards for me.

I like to drink fruit juice, if they don't have any then water will do.
I'm also a well-behaved person at any party, who enjoys having meals and talking to people in a relaxed manner. You wouldn't see me carry on like the girls above. |

Maybe there's nothing wrong with it, but it's un-Lao and not in line with our culture.

Hello Admin,
Are u sure that these people are "lo-so"? how can u tell? It is a custom here that the participants to a birthday party receive few cream on the cheeks! You probably had experienced this custom before. By the way i was wondering about the rights of this people about the use of their images. In many countries, you might get in troubles for publishing pictures without the consent of the people involved. Is there any laws in lao about this topic? I do agree with u this example is extreme! |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Admin Saovaluck on 28th Sep, 2011 at 9:10am
These people are "lo-so" as far as I am concerned. You may have a different opinion.
I see more than just a few cream on the cheeks. It's all over their face and hair. Not to mention, they eat like animals and I don't want to see their tongue and mouth with food. Those who get in trouble usually post explicit pictures of people without their permission. No one in our picture is naked or having sex. It's not necessary to contact everyone at a party or public place and ask for their permission. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by somvang on 29th Sep, 2011 at 8:06am
Thanks for your answer Admin,
I have just check on wiki what they have as definition on hi-so, here is what i found but nothing on lo-so (yet) High society may refer to: Upper class, group of people at the top of a social hierarchy Gentry, origin Old French genterie, from gentil ‘high-born, noble High society (group), social grouping which socialites may be affiliated with. Socialite, person of social prominence, who spends significant resources entertaining and being entertained according to this definition the people concerned definitely spends significant resources entertaining and being entertained! If they were persons of social prominence, the pictures will not be online or taken at all! May be they have some kind of royal blood in their veins who knows? Obviously they are not from lower class, they are not dressed as street beggars and can afford a lot of booze! Pay attention to the wood table it cost an eye! They are not hi-so nor lo-so. Just people having fun! Not your kind of fun Admin. ones could consider that their behavior is gross. Of course you will not publish any photos of naked persons coz you will be under the fire of the law on pornography. Pornographic materials are illegal in Laos! Never the less this people have rights, just check Lao administration official tourism guide and you will see a cartoon that describes the do and do not. one of the drawing is about a falang behaving as a paparazi (do not) and the same falang politely asking permission to take a picture (do). I know several professional photographers operating in laos some are also journalist they work for KPL and Vientiane Times and are very strict about intellectual property "i am an artist, i do not work for free, i have bills to pay also!" but very loose when it comes to pay the models or ask permission. From my point of view taking a pictures of someone without their consent is piracy! Admin i do not want to have any argument with you. i am just saying that you should pay more attention to the "ethics" of photojournalism for your own good. Regards |

You don't need to be dressed as a beggar to be a lower class. Everyone, the rich and poor can afford to buy alcohol in Laos because most people like to drink alcohol. And notice that they have some foreign guests, they probably help out too. wrote on 29th Sep, 2011 at 8:06am:
Then why isn't pornographic materials blocked in Laos? Anyone can freely visit a porn site in Laos if they wanted to. And adult VCDs are sold in every corner of Vientiane. wrote on 29th Sep, 2011 at 8:06am:

Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by somvang on 3rd Oct, 2011 at 11:53am
Hello Admin,
Sorry to reply late i had a busy weekend! as u know the boat racing festival has begun. lots of people to visit! I did notice the falang in the background but i do not think that his presence has nothing to do with the behavior of the girls. He probably contributed to buy alcohol. Not everybody can afford to buy alcohol : monthly salary in any factory 50 usd, share a cheap home with coworkers 10 usd. Eat everyday 30 usd. buy few things like tooth paste, shampoo, cloths, shoes...10 usd. 50 usd for survival only, booze is a luxury! Alcohol is a lesser devil far more preferable than heroin, opium and yaba (this sh*t is far too cheap and keep gaining market shares over alcohol). Porn is available on the internet, blocking access to it is a waste of time and energy. I did not know that adult VCD were that easy to obtain i never noticed anything in shops. Never the less i can be sure of it, anyone crazy enough to publish or produce any porn material in laos is going to feel the heat of the flamethrower! How did you obtain this pictures? it comes from a website, a social network or blog? Have a pleasant festival Regards PS : please dispatch your photographers to capture the lao and unlao culture during this major event. |

Really? These people are trash because they got drunk and ate some cake messily?
I can't believe how judgmental you are saovaluck. That's not very Buddhist of you...I think that makes you...wait for it... UN-Lao! Just like these people you're deriding. Face it, if these people were born in Laos, grew up in Laos, speak Lao, and eat larb mu, they're probably part of your culture! What you're doing is using what's called the "no true Scotsman" logical fallacy (feel free to educate yourself, and google it). Just because you are completely boring and only drink juice or water doesn't mean other people can't drink a bit too much and have some fun. If I had a choice between hanging out with you, or them, I'd choose them in a second. Also, while I'm ranting I'll give you the farang view of hi-so "fashion". * Fake white skin is ugly (just like fake orange tan is ugly) * The ugly frilly skirt-shorts and baggy blouse-tit-curtains combo is ugly as hell (even worse are those shorts-skirt-blouse-overall-one-piece monstrosities) * Nobody likes those stupid hats you so called "hi-so" people love so much * When a farang sees a girl dressed in the above manner, they automatically assume Gold Digger(even more so than hookers) Anyway, just thought I'd give you some things to think about while you're up there on your high horse looking down at the peasants. Maybe you'll learn something, or gain some perspective, since it's obvious you haven't done either and taken advantage of your privileged position to better yourself in any way. Sorry for the rant, I've just gotten a bit tired of your holier than thou attitude. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Admin Saovaluck on 10th Nov, 2011 at 4:53pm
It's okay to drink alcohol in moderation, but if a Lao girl gets drunk as a result of drinking too much alcohol then they're not the sort of people I want to deal with.
Being a non-alcoholic drinker doesn't mean the person is boring. There are other ways to enjoy a party than putting cake all over each others faces and showing dirty tongues. Lao peasants don't eat cakes and drink a variety of alcohol, they certainly have a bit of money to dye their hair as well. "Falang" people with a sense of fashion like those hats that you call "stupid". Sorry if I offended anyone but I like to speak my mind, and I appreciate your thoughts on the subject too. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by JSEA on 10th Nov, 2011 at 7:08pm
Wow, you took that surprisingly well. Respekt as Ali G would say.
The hats are still dumb though. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Admin Saovaluck on 11th Nov, 2011 at 3:49am
People have different likes and dislikes, we're not all like you. Haven't you seen Princess Beatrice's silly hat? Many people out there wanted to get their hands on it. It was eventually sold by eBay auction for over $130,000.
As for fake white skin, fake orange tan and so on, everything about us is fake. If you want to be 100% natural then just hop out of bed in the morning and don't bother visiting the bathroom to try and improve your appearance. People get tattoos to show off, they get braces to make their smiles look better, they use botox to remove wrinkles, they dye their hair to appear youthful, they put make up on to make themselves more appealing. There are endless possibilities that we can do to our bodies. |

When you say "we", you're not referring to everyone in America because I know some people over there and they don't have fun this way.
This sort of behaviour has nothing to do with whether a person is rich or poor, it's about their moral standards. It is trash in the eyes of anyone with high standards. |

I'm originally from Minnesota, but now live in Southern California and I'll admit that none of my Lao friends behave in such a manner either. I also don't have a problem with those who do. To each their own. Many of my Asian "non-Lao" friends have always had the impression that American Southeast Asians were kind of trashy and acted really uncouth -- They have also been to Laos and Thailand so they're familiar with Southeast Asian cultures.

Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Admin Saovaluck on 24th Dec, 2011 at 5:45am
In your previous post, you mentioned that most Lao-Americans that you know would fit in this category. And now you say none of your Lao friends behave like this?
I have a problem, it's not the type of party that I would like to attend. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by hankido on 24th Dec, 2011 at 10:59am
I said most, but non of mine. I certainly don't have a problem with those who do though. I could care less what or how they choose to entertain themselves. Who am I to judge?
|
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Admin Saovaluck on 24th Dec, 2011 at 12:11pm
Your friends are good, decent people.
You may not judge them, but others will. As human beings we are always judging others (whether negatively or positively). If you choose to have cake all over your face at a birthday party, then you have to expect that people will look down on you. |

When I said "we", I was referring to every young person in the States. It doesn't matter which class your from in society, your race or gender. We go out have fun and do stupid things once in a while. It is not like we go out and party like that everyday. You can't just judge someone just because you seen pictures of them throwing cake at each other. How do you know they are like that every time they go out? I know you said you like to speak your mind. But you can't judge someone from the color of their skin or the way they act. And put them in the Low Class and High Class category. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Admin Saovaluck on 24th Dec, 2011 at 2:03pm
They may not do it every day, but their face and their style tells me what class they are.
You don't need to throw cake at each other to have fun, I'm sure many poor children in Laos would be glad to eat some of that cake. Most Lao people dance and sing when they're having fun at parties. |
Title: Re: Lao version of trash Post by Heelaburt on 22nd Jan, 2012 at 2:27pm
The admin is a classy girl, I got to respect that cause you don't see that too often these days. I learned in Laos that everything you do is being judged by others. Reputation is a way of life there. How you dress, where you go at night is looked at by others in the community.
In these pictures, my impression is that these girls were paid to keep these guys entertained for the night, you guys all know what I'm talking about. No one wants to talk about it but we all know what's up, just cause you don't see the money or anything. Admin, we don't really call them trash in america, it's called Jerry Springer or Girls Gone Wild. You don't need to drink to have a good time, I prefer to remember the 'good times' in my life instead. As for the cake, I think I'll stick to eating it on my plate instead of playing with it, cause you never know, someone could try to take pictures of you when you least expect and post it on the net for all to see, including your wife. |
