We rarely have house fires in Laos.

That is exactly what our house was like in the jungle but with no wood planks on the side - we used bamboo instead. Is there a firestation in Laos?

Yes we do in the city. There's no Fire Station in rural areas.

Title: Re: Hay is still used for roofs in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 15th May, 2011 at 10:23pm If you're poor, you're really poor. A house using hay for their roof in Laos. A house using leaves for their wall in Laos. |

I can live in one these houses and with no mortgage responsibitlity. I would not mind trading the current lifestyle to the hunter and gatherer days. Life is much simpler.

Yes, there's no stress.
The people who live in these houses wash themselves in the river, and go to the bush to do their business. Is that what you used to do too, during your childhood? |

Yea no bills, mortgage, credit card or car payment sound nice. As long as you have land. I would build something simple, with better design and material.

Living in the jungle of Laos, we did not need to use money at all. We had rice fields to grow rice, a rice silo to store rice, gathered bamboo shoots and other wild veggies/fruits (and grew our own) and hunted for animals as parts of our daily rituals. I had no shoes, no shirts, no problem and no stress. Definitely did my business in the wild and/or outhouse. I can trade to this lifestyle any day ::).

Even if you had money, I guess you couldn't do anything much with it because there's no shops in the jungle.
That's a huge lifestyle change from having nothing in the jungle, to living a more comfortable life with computer and internet access. It gives people who were born poor in remote areas of Laos hope that one day their life will change too. I don't think you would enjoy going back to living the way you used to live in the jungle. You're just saying it now because you miss Laos, but you're more older and wiser now so your needs are different. When you were a child, it didn't really matter if you had nothing. |

Very good perspective and yes I do miss Laos but just recently though. If you were to ask me what I think of Laos 5 to 10 years ago, my answer would be 'nothing'. You stated well, as we get older we are less ignorant because we become wiser and humbled soulfully. I will never forget where I am from.
I would enjoy the lifestyle even more but on a 10 acres property. Food quality is getting worser and worser everyday here in the US. Admin Saovaluck wrote on 16th May, 2011 at 4:10am:

If you have 10 aces in Texas you can grow and raise your own food for fun. if you have time. In Minnesota Lao-Hmong like to grow garden to eat, sell and raise their own chicken. Problem with American food they used chemicals and pesticide which cause cancer.

Yes 10 acres is perfect in Texas and with a couple of horses. It would be fun to raise your own protein and grow whatever you want to eat. YOu can grow everything organically with no pestsicides/chemicals. Most of American food are by-products of corn and that is why the majority of Americans of all races are heavy. If you look back at pictures of people from the 70's and even 80's most are slim. Currently, almosts all cows, pigs and chickens are corn fed as well.
I like the Lao-Hmong style in Minnesota 8-). llX wrote on 17th May, 2011 at 1:05am:
