One of my favourites, Jasmine rice with "Tom Yum Goong".

I can't believe my eyes! ;D ;D ;D

Yes it says "Pepsi".

It's probably time you took some Lao language lessons, so you can stop telling me to translate things for you.

It's would be nice if you stop put up some food photos for while...I am trying to lose some weight! Thank you....

Not a problem Tee. Maybe some low-fat "larp" will help with your weight loss.

Third pic is 'pun ga boon'?

Title: Re: Vientianians enjoying lunch
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 17th May, 2011 at 10:50pm
The lady is just holding a piece of lettuce. There's no "ga poon".

The people sitting on the floor are having exactly the same meals, "larp" and soup, like the people on the table.

What is the correct term for 'rice basket' in the Vientiane dialect?

Is it 'dip khao' or 'ap khao'?

I keep forgetting and just interchange between the two.

Title: Re: Vientianians enjoying lunch
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 18th May, 2011 at 2:13am
It doesn't really matter what you say, both are correct.

"Ap kaow" is used more in Vientiane and northern Laos, whereas "Ga dip kaow" and "Dip kaow" is used more in southern Laos.

Popular "cook it yourself" foods in Lao restaurants.

I don't like to fiddle around with food, I prefer to have everything cooked and ready on my plate.

Another thing I don't like about it is that the food is shared. People insert the chopsticks into their mouth and they also use it to cook the food with it.

I am totally agreed with you admin. I am telling you they love their seen dart.  Is that what they called "SeenDart"  I was in Laos last year and they would love to have me take them to seendart restaurant.  I didn't enjoy it as much as they did.  It's all fun. I preferred something cooked and ready to eat just like you admins. lolz   ;D

Title: Re: Vientianians enjoying lunch
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 18th May, 2011 at 7:36am
Yes, that's what we call it in Lao language.

Most people in Laos love to eat these sorts of meals because it's a nice way to socialise, and it's also cheap because it's basically an all-you-can-eat buffet style. I'm one of the few who don't like it, due to the reasons mentioned.

You sound real greedy baby! ;D ;D ;D

What, you never, ever, shared a bowl of soup?

Come on! Stop lying.

Lets not forget about the used and abused cup, that circulate when the shots of whiskey makes the rounds. ;D ;D ;D I'm sure we've all 'shared' more than we'd like to admit. ;)

Title: Re: Vientianians enjoying lunch

Well, yes, I have shared a bowl of soup in the old days, but people change when they grow older. Germs were the furthest thing from my mind when I was a child.

I've never had whiskey in my life, nor have I shared a glass of alcohol.

Why are you so scared of contracting 'germs' these days? Nothing will happen! Just ask all the 'real' Lao that still share! ;)

I know that nothing disastrous will happen, but aren't you in the same boat? You wouldn't eat anything if they didn't wear gloves.

I don't drink alcohol so I have never been drunk.

Okay. I see. You got me there. Good one. [smiley=thumbup.gif]

However, it is quite different under the pressure of peers. When all eyes are on me (When that used and abused whiskey cup starts making the rounds) all my hygiene standards are thrown out the window. I don't think you've been in such a predicament, so it's highly unlikely you don't comprehend.

So, you don't drink; you'd rather NOT eat sticky rice nor Larb Dip; you don't know how to play any card games; And you don't gossip.

You're not Lao. ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Vientianians enjoying lunch

I have been in such a predicament, I think we all have, especially at Lao weddings when the bride and groom makes the rounds with a glass and a bottle of whiskey. I've been pressured to drink it on many ocassions, but I always deny it.

I can eat cooked "larp" with white jasmine rice. I don't mind sticky rice every now and then.

I only eat cook larb myself. I don't like any Larb that's Dip. Didn't like the taste. In America no time to cook sticky rice. Work work time is money here.

Sticky rice doesn't take very long to steam.

Your work seems simple considering that you have a lot of time on your hands to use the internet.

11 hours of work (you must be rich), and finish at 2am in the morning?

I got sidetracked (maybe i had to take a call, who knows). Posting from a mobile phone - you know. You also know what I really meant:

If it's not 'dip' (raw), it's not Larb.
