We mainly play all the Lao games! I'm part of the younger generation, so we used to play childhood games like Last Card etc. Texas Hold Em Poker is popular among the younger generation too. The OGs are straight up gamblers, bro! They usually start playing on Friday - after work - and go all the way until Sunday, sometimes even 'till Monday! With no sleep! When I was younger, the ladies used to play Dam Dum/Dam Dang for 10c per unit. Back then, a $10 profit was considered a killing! ;D ;D ;D Now everybody plays quick-fire games like: Gehr or Pok Deng. Thousands of dollars can change hands in one round alone! Does the Lao community in Minnesota have 'home games' like which I have just described? |

That's a crazy lifestyle because it should be tough on your body and soul because of the stresss involved in playing cards if the main goal is to win.
I am extremely surprise because I am not aware of it and probably due to fact that I do not really know any khonLao in Texas. As matter of fact I have not associated with any khonLao at all (besides faa mily members). However, I know some khonLao now here in LaoPride forum :D. Larb Dip wrote on 15th May, 2011 at 2:18pm:

Title: Re: Lao people playing games Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 16th May, 2011 at 5:32am
Lao people usually play cards for days, when someone is born (Ngun Gum) and when someone dies (Hean Dee). They get bored, so playing cards is something to do to keep themselves occupied, and it has become part of Lao tradition. People still get some sleep, and those awake take turns playing cards.
In the old days when there was no electricity, people needed to stay for days to keep the fire burning so that mother and her newborn baby are kept warm, and keep the ghosts away from stealing the baby. That's how playing cards all day and night became part of the Lao tradition for "Ngun Gum". And when someone dies, people need to look after the body 24/7 and keep the candles burning. In Lao culture, the deceased is kept inside the house for days until they are cremated. There's also a superstition that if a black cat jumps over the coffin, the spirit will wake up angry, so people looked after the coffin to prevent that from happening. And that's how playing cards to stop boredom became part of the Lao tradition for family and friends when they go to "Hean Dee". |

These are my rules of gamble:
1. If can not afford to lose than do not gable. 2. If not tough enough do not walkin casino. 3. Hit and Run. 4. Be honest to yourself and your family. 5. Gamble is Bussiness ( as job ) Not For Fun. Asking yourself when you had lose $1,000 ? Do you think it fun? Most of the ppl will answer "NO" I had seen many bad things in life. I knew how bad the gamble is about. I been there, I knew. Just follow the 5 rules then you will do OK. |

It's good that you usually play no more than $100 for entertainment purposes. |

Some people are addicted and loss thousand and thousand of dollars. Some people lose everything house, car. Casino is only for entertainment only. Title: Re: Lao people playing games Post by WantLaosToBeIndependence on 20th May, 2011 at 12:08am
Anything is dealing with the money, you have to treat it as the bussiness or job. Most ppl look at the casino as the place to entertainning that why the house have advantage on the customers. They all thinking to go there to have fun. Casino is not the place to go there and hang out or just go there to get a free drinks and buffet. I had see a guy just be there to get a free buffet and end up losing his money more than $2,000 for just a buffet.
There is game in most of the casino you can play in chance of 50-50 called " BACCARAT"; this only the game you can bit the house. Most of the Highrollers are playing this game and the fungoers / Lowrollers are end up play the slotmachines and Blackjack are the real suckers. In Laos at Phu Khao Khaiw Casino, their Baccarat is different rule than here. I myself do not think anyone can bit them. They burn a card every single hand out of 8 deckcards with the 416 card. Its not easy to count them and the slotmachines is 1000% sucking in not pay out. DON'T STEP IN THE CASINO FOR JUST HAVING FUN. GO TO BAR OR CLUB WILL BE BETTER. |
Title: Re: Lao people playing games Post by Lao LXE on 20th May, 2011 at 2:51am
What you saying is true. One a while I go for casino for seafood buffet and play with $100. It's fun walking around and drink beer or free soda with some friends. I go about one a month. I like the crabs leg and seafood. One time I hit $700 at Las Vegas slot machine last January after eating seafood there.

I bet meat products in Laos have higher quality than here in the US. For example beef in the US mainly comes from cow that is forced fed with corn in a closed system. Cow raised in Laos probably roam around and grass fed? Or does beef come from neighbouring country, ie Thailand?
|
Title: Re: Lao people playing games Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 22nd May, 2011 at 5:38am
We raise our own cows in Laos, but if we run short then we import them from Vietnam and Thailand.
Meat products in Laos is okay, but many are sold in the open markets and they are usually left out in the heat, unlike in the US where they probably keep their meat in cooler and cleaner areas. |

That's very good to hear and these cows are most likely grass fed from the open space and not forced fed with corn mix? In the US beefs that come from grass fed cows ('organic' beef) are very expensive (2X the 'conventional' corn fed beef).

I've already touched on the issue of restaurants 'saving' everything well past their use by dates. After leaking from the backside on an average of twice a night, I just had to boycott those establishments. It wasn't just me who caught severe cases of diarrhea, my whole entourage picked up on it too. There were even times where we had to impromptu - en masse- toilet visits while we were out on the town. Some detoured off to the bushes - not me, I was treated like a 'king', so of course I got the 'throne' ;) - to take care of business. Until this 'stingy' behaviour is rectified, there will be no more dining out for me. [smiley=thumbdown.gif] |

What about folks in New Zealand? Slim/Fat? Probably many fine blonde hair women.

That's why I started to go to the gym. I'm not fat but want to turn what I got into a muscle.

Admin, why are chicken eggs so expensive in Laos if chickens are raised in Laos to get eggs? The reason why I asked is I thought they were imported to be that high.
Dip, do you have pictures of New Zealand neighborhood? You do not have to show your crib if you do not want to. Never been to New Zealand but would like to see a 'typical' New Zealand environment. |

I already uploaded that video. In it is a typical low socioeconomic suburb. I'd rather not. The community in NZ is very tight. Everyone knows everyone. I've already made a few enemies on here, maybe I'll make more if I reveal my identity. I know most of what I enquire about is unconventional. Sex is not something openly discussed in Laos. I also would like to save my parents the stigma. ;) |
