Lao Democratic, a member of the Lao Pride forum has made a much needed donation of educational materials to children in a rural Lao school.
The school is Ban Dong Bang Kindergarten and Primary School in Saythany district. The donation, valued at US$100, included pens, pencils, exercise books, a wide range of illustrated readers, coloring books, colored wax crayons, colored pencils, erasers and educational wall posters. Old Man's wife presented the materials to the children The children and teachers of Dong Bang village would like to send their grateful thanks to Lao Democratic and the Lao Pride forum. Old Man |

Aren't little kids the coolest? I teach kindergarten in Shanghai. They call it that, anyway, even though the ages are 3-7. My kids are awesome. And rock on for that fabulous spread of donated goodies!

The school students are cute, and it shows what a kind-hearted and caring person that Lao Democratic is.
The small contribution will make a difference to their future. |

"Lao Democratic" is a nice guy. Thank you, and your wife Old Man for getting the supply. You got pretty nice stuff for the kids.
I'll definitely do it again and will donate couple time a year. "It what from the heart that count." :) ;) |

I just send moneygram to Old Man to get the supply on the list. I just talk to a relative, and they're also interest in the donation too. 8-) ;) |

That would be better because I think they can get more supplies over there becuase we do not have to deal with shipping cost. Send to Old Man?

There are 6 teachers in the school that received your donation. If we receive more donations, we will present the materials to other primary schools in Saythany district. There are dozens of schools in the district that need this kind of equipment and we don't want to favor just one village at the expense of other village schools. Old Man |

I have to agree with you. I never really wanted kids, but after being in Thailand and Laos that's starting to change. They're really cute, seem to be very happy, and smile all the time. I don't think I'm ready for settling down or kids yet though...maybe another 10-15 years. |

No. My wife is a farmer, traditional Lao Sauna owner and caretaker of Old Man. She just got done up in her finery to hand out Lao Democratic's donations to these children in a local rural primary school. Makes a better picture that if I had done it. I always thinks it looks a little condescending if a foreigner is handing out charity to Lao people. It's better if a Lao person does it. Old Man |

The school doesn't look like it has many enrolled. Is it a real rural school? Way out in the jungles?

Title: Re: Lao Pride Member Makes Donation to Lao Children Post by Old Man on 25th Apr, 2011 at 6:57am
The school has about 100 children and is in a farming community in Saythany district 30 km. outside Vientiane.

In the most remote areas, there are still schools with mud floors and there are still some villages which lack schools. However, in the push to achieve 98% primary school enrollment by 2015, the govt. directs the many large donor organisations to fund school construction in those deprived areas and dozens of new schools are being built each month. The schools are built to a standard utilitarian design with brick walls, cement floors and (where electricity is available) overhead fans. What they often lack are proper toilet facilities (we built a good bathroom and water supply in one of our local schools last year), educational materials and sports equipment. Old Man |

I don't know about now. Old Man or Admins would know. Back in the old day when I live in Laos my uncle was a teacher. The salary is very low and sometime they get pay every two or three month. Sometime none. Admins say preschool teacher get about $60 a month. Not sure about high school or middle school.

With Mr Lao4ever's kind donation, we bought the educational toys and sports equipment. Here they are laid out on Old Man's floor.
We then delivered the materials to the children in Ban Dong Bang Kindergarten and Primary school. All the children and their teachers asked us to pass on their thanks to Mr Lao4ever and the Lao Pride Forum. The next school we will help will be Ban Na Sala Primary School, also in Saythany district. Old Man |

My thanks also, William. There's no need to go to the trouble of bringing materials with you and adding weight to your luggage. You can buy school materials or whatever you would like to donate more cheaply in the market in Vientiane and deliver the materials to the school yourself or leave them with me when we meet for your wedding in Vientiane next month. Title: Re: Lao Pride Member Makes Donation to Lao Children Post by Larb Dip on 28th Apr, 2011 at 10:58pm
It looks like the school field/playground. Maybe that's why it looks droughty.

Title: Re: Lao Pride Member Makes Donation to Lao Children Post by Old Man on 28th Apr, 2011 at 11:59pm
It's near the end of the dry season, so of course the ground is dry and dusty.
During the rainy season, that playground will be a sea of mud for much of the time. Old Man |

Agreed. You has to find the right person, a person you can trust who has the same passion, and serious about charity work.
I just meet Old Man in LP, and testing the water. This my first time directly donating to Laos student, and it turn out great. I plan to continuing donating. I been thinking about helping student in Laos for a while now, and there's many charity out there. I planing to do charity work when I retire in Laos. :) wrote on 28th Apr, 2011 at 4:53am:

Laos is hot and humid and can be very dry in the summer. Watering the grass is pricey and Laos is low on water resource.

Title: Re: Lao Pride Member Makes Donation to Lao Children Post by Old Man on 29th Apr, 2011 at 1:42pm
Laos has an abundance of water resources. The reason that school playground is not covered in grass and other greenery is...............because it's a playground. Grass has a hard time growing when kids are running and playing on the surface every day.
Old Man |
Title: Re: Lao Pride Member Makes Donation to Lao Children Post by MrLao4ever on 29th Apr, 2011 at 4:42pm
What type of grass is growing around the school? I would assume that those kids prefer to play on softer grassy surface - earsier on their feet and body.
There is a grass called 'St. Augustine' that thrives very well in hot humid conditions like in Texas during the summer and I think this grass can thrive as well in Laos. St. Augustine grows quick and horizontally on sandy surfaces, so they spread like wildfire once it starts. Water once a week and they are fine. Pretty much all of outdoor soccer/football fields in the Houston, Texas area grow this grass because they are tough to wear down when stepping on it. St. Augustine is very good in stabilizing surface sand and soil in place from man-made and/or wind erosion. wrote on 29th Apr, 2011 at 1:42pm:

Good stuff. I think this grass will work because Laos and Texas has similar weather. Just need to find distributor in Laos. Springer system also help.

WE should be the supplier/distributor ;)! All we need is very open land outside of Vientiane, level the land surface with sand, build an air conditioned center for the workers for breaktimes and lunch times, grow the grass, bring in sod cutting machines, cut the sods (18 inch x 12 inch), load the sods to trucks and distribute them to a plant/flower selling centers throughout Vientiane and other citiies (or can go directly to any house).
Grass should be a major part of the development of Vientiane and Laos in general because grass beautifies the ground, helps retain moisture in the ground and control man-made and wind erosions on the surface significantly and should drastically reduce sands or mud flowing to the streets of Vientaine. As a tourist to Vientiane would you prefer to see greener land/pasture throughout Vientaine (or sandy/muddy ground conditions on roadways and walkways)? Should reduce air pollution in city as well, caused by blowing dust. llX wrote on 29th Apr, 2011 at 6:33pm:
