Title: Laos minimum wage increase 700,000 kip
Post by Lao Democratic on 13th Apr, 2011 at 6:34pm
Amidst rising food and fuel prices, authorities are negotiating a rise in the minimum wage for Lao workers. The Lao Federation of Trade Unions has stated the proposed wage rise is aimed at improving the livelihoods of workers in response to rising inflation.

http://laovoices.com/2011/04/13/minimum-wage-increase-unlikely-to-affect-inflation/

Some businesses and economists have voiced concern that raising the minimum wage could lead to higher inflation as it would increase production costs and businesses would have to sell their products at higher prices.

The minimum wage for Lao workers is currently 348,000 kip per month but, if allowances are included, a worker on the minimum wage can earn about 500,000 kip.
The last increase to the minimum wage occurred in 2009, when it rose from 290,000 kip to 348,000 kip per month. The Lao Federation of Trade Unions wants to propose a minimum wage of about 700,000 kip per month, more than double the current wage.

Laos minimum wage should increase to 1,400,000 a month. Not 700,000 kip. Its not enough.

Per Capita, per month

Thailand = 3,066,666 kip
China = 2,855,333 kip
Laos =  750,000 kip
Vietnam = 778,666 kip
Cambodia = 693,333 kip
Burma = 798,000 kip

;) :o

2,1000,000 kip would be better.  What would be the expected wage for fresh out with a bachelor's degree? Just curious to know.

If you have a bachelor's degree in Laos, you're expected to earn over $200 US (1,600,000 kip) per month.

Anything less than that, then your education didn't really give you an advantage.

That's not bad compared to the salary some of my cousins were making a few years ago. They were only making 1000 baht working as loggers. Maybe they were under the table or something, who knows. Back then, that was the going rate to take a pusao to bed. Not fair, right? Some people work a sternly for a whole month, while others only have to bonce up and down for a hour to take all your effort away from you. :'(

The more you pay the people the better. The money will stimulated Laos economy. People make more will spend more. I don't understand why per capita in some country is $40,000 and other only $1,200 a year." Life is not fair." In a perfect world if Lao-American make $50,000 a year so should Lao in Laos. If I get my way.

Big company, corporation wanted to pay people as cheap as possible, more profits and money in their pocket. If America don't have Union or rule of law they probably pay us $2 and hrs and work 6-7 day a week. Like in 1900's.

Per capita income in Laos is $1,120 a year. But some people make way less.

Inequality. In Thailand is worst average worker in Bangkok make about $700 a month, but in Lanna and Isan people only make about $230. Thats why red shirt protest.

In the 1930's, Judy Garland was earning around $300 - $500 US per week in America, which was a lot of money for a teenager or anybody back in those days. I guess being a movie star helps.

In the case of Bangkok, you probably need to work in a professional field to be earning around $700 US per month. The average monthly salary seems less in Issan, because many are low skilled workers, so it brings the average down.

Title: Re: Laos minimum wage increase 700,000 kip
Post by Lao Democratic on 14th Apr, 2011 at 2:51am
If Judy Garland make $300-$500 that's a lot of money in the old day. Back then e erything was cheap, gas probably cost $.10 a gallon and house probably cost $15,000.

Isan and Lanna get pay less because they kept them poor. Jek Bangkok need cheap Labors and sex worker. Jek hold the power, control the army and the economy. Most jek live in Bangkok about 7 million out of 11 million Bangkokians. That's how the system work.

$200 is still too low. Come on Lao government Lao worker need higher wages, living wages so young Lao don't take a risk working in Thailand.

Someone told me you can make about $500 working for foreign company or non profits organization.

$200 US is the minimum monthly income in any sector if you have a qualification.

I know people who work for the government that earn $200-$300 US per month.

That's right, local people working for foreign companies earn around $500 US per month, they get bonuses too.

My friend (has a PhD already in Geophysics) and I are trying to start our own consulting company using the most updated Geophysical tools  (shallow seismics, magnetic and electromagnetic) to detect any out of place anomalies (UXOs, underground water table, reservoir, mineral deposits, buried archeological buildings and underground caves and so on.....)  below the surface.   Since the country in the developing stage, I figure that Laos is the perfect niche for us to be in because they probably need to figure out what is underneath the surface first before they build any infrastuctures (buildings and roads).

Mining is the largest taxes payer in Laos. They pay about $120 million a year.

I wonder if Lao government has their own mining company. Foreigner mining company sometime only give government 10% profits. If they give you $10 million that mean they make at least $100 million.

Laos is rich in mineral resource. I'm not sure but most of the mining company are foreigner. Maybe Lao government don't have the technology. It's easier just to sit around and correct the taxes money. If they has their own mining company they'll make $100 million instead of $10 million.

The Lao government has a substantial ownership position (40%, 50%, 60%, etc.) in many of the larger mining operations as well as other international companies operating in Laos.

Many other large projects (big hydropower dams, large agriculture projects, etc.) are run on what they call a 'build-operate-transfer' basis.  This means:

Build: The foreign company provides the capital and resources for construction which they oversee and control.

Operate: The foreign company operates the production phases of the project while undertaking substantial training of Lao nationals so Lao people will be able to run the project in the future

Transfer: The foreign company hands over ownership of the company to the Lao government who may then retain ownership, or float the company on the Lao stock market so that citizen shareholders will be the company owners.  Ownership is usually transferred to the government after a period of between 30 and 70 years, depending on the initial business license agreement.

Thank for clearing it out Old Man 40%, 50%, 60% ownership is a fair deal. Now I feel better knowing it. BeerLao is also 50% own by Lao government and foreign company.

Very good-better than I expected.  What is the percentage of the Lao workforce with companies?

I'm not sure about percent of Lao workforce with the company, but some foreign company bring their own worker. They say Lao Labors lack the skilled.

I'm thinking it just an excuse. China got 1.3 billion people, Vietnam got 90 million. Skilled or no skilled they don't really need any Lao worker. You can trains people to do anything, but will take time. They're working on training people though.

Government should required foreign company to hire at least 25% of Lao workforce or fine them, but everything is easier said then done. Corruption, bribery is a problem in one party system. There's around 200,000 illegal worker in Laos taking jobs away from the locals. Government has full authority of power they can pass any law and policy if they want too.

"Human being is enterpreneurial and creative. But the only thing that make them poor is the policy and system they live by and environment they live in."

What's the joke?  Am I missing something?

The Lao government DOES insist that foreign companies employ a certain quota of Lao employees.  It depends on the industry though. When I set up my resort, we were allowed to have only one foreign employee for every 10 Lao employees.

As I stated in my earlier post, the government DOES insist that large foreign companies train Lao staff under the build, operate, transfer framework.

Makes sense. A very good policy.

The factory I work in has about 1 local for every 3 illegals working, and this is Northwest Ohio to boot. I could understand if it was California or Texas.

Very good policy. In other word whatever we are thinking about Lao government is way ahead, and already working on it.

That's very correct right now after lookiing at the Foreign Investment law website - 90% of your workforce has to be Lao. Definitely very good law for the locals :).

If the government can enforce the law. Why is there 200,000 illegal worker in Laos? Action speak louder then word. Bribery, corruption is common in Asia and everywhere else.

Just like Thailand for example prostitution was supposed to be illegal since 1967.
;) :)

200,000 from where? I thought many khonLao cross over to Thailand to find jobs (illegally and legally). If they do not enforce the law then what is the point of having a law then? A country is more organized if everyone are involve in the process.

Good point "what's the point of the law if its not enforce." About 60,000 Lao work in Thailand. It was on the new, government is trying to crackdown on 200,000 illegal worker. They didn't say from where, but most likely they are from China and Vietnam.
