You know Lao New Years is approaching when you see Easter bunnies and easter eggs lining the shelves of your local supermarkets.

Do they celebrate this in Laos?

We don't celebrate Easter in Laos, and there are no chocolate eggs for sale, not at a typical market anyway. You probably have to go to a proper store. I know the mini marts sell chocolates all year round. You can buy real bunnies in Laos.

Yes, it's the same days every year. Thailand begin their New Year a day earlier than Laos on April 13.

Lao New Year celebrations can start early as we have seen with the case in Sydney, Australia.

In Laos too, celebrations start early, some people still continue partying even after April 16, but you can't throw water on people after April 16.

Will the 'innocent' be exempt from these waterfights? Or is it just a given that if you happened to find yourself in between the crossfiring, you, too, are going to end up doused like everyone else?

I understand that the tradition of splashing or politely pouring water on someone during Lao New Year has been corrupted. Here are a few examples I found on the internet...

He added that many Vientiane residents didn't stick to tradition in splashing water, instead throwing water-filled plastic bags from pick-up trucks, which caused problems. Some people had been injured and the mirrors of 13 vehicles had been broken.

No one is safe from marauding gangs armed with water balloons and high-powered water guns. Actually, in Vientiane, there are not so many activities for people to do. So people just got drunk, and splash water along the road which cause a lot of accident during Pi Mai each year.

I imagine that people are just having fun, but some times we can overdo a good thing. Keo told me once that she had a friend that got hit full in the face by a water balloon filled with red dye. That would ruin my day.

William, That's right. Last year, a pregnant woman was just sitting in the park, and she got hit in her stomach by a water bomb by a passing car. She's crazy to be out and about when she knows that people will throwing water left, right and centre. They probably didn't mean to throw it towards her, but it hit her hard and it hurt her too.

Larp Dip, If you're caught in the crossfire, you will doused like everyone else. Strangers are allowed to wet each other during the Lao New Year. If you don't want to get wet in Laos, not a problem, stay indoors for a few days.

Stay inside? No way! Not me seaw. I'll be out there in the warzone - aptly attired, tanktop and all - with everyone else having a good time! A few buckets would come in handy too.

How about you seaw? Do you join in with the waterfights?

No, I won't be in the war zone. I'll be in the comfort zone during the Lao New Year.

Very true and especially in Texas (southernmost state in the US besides Florida) because it gets extremely hot and humid in the Lone Star State.  I would say 1/3 of all homes in Texas have swimming pools.  

I have to admit that I have 'live in sin'  ;) before but that is in the past.

How can you tell just by looking at them? I have noticed that even some of the 'innocent' girls are starting to wear clothes that have been tailored with cleavage in mind.

In NZ homes don't really need to come equiped with pools let alone the inflatable versions. Over here, especially in Auckland, we are blessed to be surrounded by the sea. Everywhere you go there's a beach. NZ is reknowed for it's outdoor activities. Kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, bungy jumping, snorkelling for paua etc. are all part of the Kiwi culture. In the summer months you really need to slip-slop-and-slap on that sunscreen. The ozone layer above NZ is quite crappity smacked. The suns harmful UV rays radiate through a gaping hole.

There's a Rugby World Cup happening later on in the year too. That would be the ideal time for anyone who wants to try out NZ. The country will be pumping - Auckland in particular. :)

It's a lot of movies for someone who only lived to 47, and she also did other things such as performing in concerts and hosting a TV show. She was very beautiful and talented, someone that I've held in high regard since I was a schoolgirl.

Yes, a relative from overseas sent me some of her DVD movies, but I purchased most of them online over the years.

There were no such venues to linger after dusk. Man have times changed. My old lady got a bit of a culture shock the first time she went back to Laos. 'This isn't the Laos we left behind', she would say. ;D

Well, this isn't my preferred method of party, that's why I never like to participate during the Lao New Year.

There's usually not a lot of action in the morning because many partygoers are still drunk, tired and asleep, but come midday water fights continue again into the evening and traffic are regularly at a standstill.

Three days of celebration for many people, and now it's back to business as usual.

I think you old lady is other living in the country side ...In the old day..during the Vietnam, I did see so much happening..The bar....were every where.....and they open until morning..... if you want to ask about the olden day....about Laos you should ask me...The admin was other too young or not even born yet!!!!!

When I was young and my mom would be talking about something that happened before I was born and I would ask, "How old was I?" or "Where was I then?"

That always confused me more because I was too young to know what she was talking about.
