Title: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by JSEA on 2nd Apr, 2011 at 11:38am
Is there anything like this in Laos?
In Thailand people are sometimes called hi-so, or lo-so, meaning they're part of high society (or pretend to be), or low society. I never noticed it in Laos, but I've only been there for about a week total (and just Vientiane). I'm curious because it really bothers me sometimes here. For example, I've had students see me eating Som Tam Thai (or Tam Lao), and khao nieow, and as they walk past they ask me "Sep ba?". Then they skitter off giggling thinking they made some really funny joke. The other thing that I've read (but never experienced) is that sometimes if a farang is dating/married to someone who looks lo-so (i.e. darker skin), it can cause problems at work because the co-workers will look down on them. So is there anything like this in Laos? I didn't really notice anything besides people liking lighter skin over darker skin (but that kinda goes for everywhere in Asia). |

andddd I just realized I said "ho-so" in the title of this thread, lmao. Sorry guys, it's meant to say hi-so.

Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 2nd Apr, 2011 at 6:55pm
I have corrected it to "Hi-So" for you. :)
Many dark skinned women are happily married to their wonderful husbands in Laos, so not everybody looks at skin colour as an important feature. The slang term "Hi-So" and "Lo-So" isn't really about one's skin colour, but more about how you act and also how much money you have. Thailand even have a rock singer called "Sek Loso" for low society, and he made a name for himself. |

Haha, thanks :)
So you're saying it's not really an issue there? |

Everywhere in the world the rich look down on poor. There's high class and low class in Laos. But not as bad as Thailand. It's well known that Bangkok look down and oppressed Lao Isan. When they say "sep ba" when you eat kao niew and papaya salad they're trying of make fun of you.

I know they're trying to make fun of me, that's why I said it bothered me :P
My small act of defiance is having a Lao flag patch stitched onto my bag that I bring to work, and drinking Beer Lao whenever possible. |

That's funny JSEA ;D. Some rich Lao also look down on other ethnic minority.

Laos doesn't have any official 'class' systems anymore. We are all pinong. We use kinship terms when speaking or referring to each other, e.g. Brother/sister/uncle/aunty/granpa/grandma etc. You don't just go around calling someone by their name alone, like in the West; unless if they're your equal (same age range). I'm sure this is the same in Siam; but in Laos the extended family is very tight and impotant too!
I think they used to say 'kanoy'. I think it's some kind of royal thing but I have since forgoten the exact meaning. Since the Communist takeover Laos is now a republic. We are all equals. ;) |

JSEA, If a westerner is dating or married to someone who looks lo-so, I don't think their co-workers will look down on them in Laos. If they do, then so be it, and don't worry about them. Everybody's got eyes, ears and a nose.
There are more westerners than ever before in Laos, and interracial dating and marriages are on the rise. |

I personally think it's good because most westerners based in Laos are educated people who are doing good for the country. |

I only have one purse because I usually don't go out anywhere, but I like luxury. I wouldn't ride a jumbo or tuk tuk for example. I don't like to share meals, if I have larp and soup etc, the bowl must be for myself. I don't like to be out in the sun unless I have a hat or umbrella, prefer to be in an air conditioned room, things like that.
|
Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by JSEA on 5th Apr, 2011 at 9:54am
I wouldn't ride a Tuk Tuk either, only motorcycle taxis for me!
Actually that's not quite true, in Laos the Tuk Tuk drivers are ok, in Thailand they are pretty much all thieves. Better to just get a metered taxi if traffic is ok. If it's bad motorcycle taxis are the way to go. |
Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 5th Apr, 2011 at 9:59am
Lao jumbo/tuk tuk drivers are not thieves, but I still don't want to go on it anyway even if they gave me a free ride. I also don't like to ride motorbikes.

Yes. I understand your point of view Admins. Average Lao worker make about $81 a month. We Lao-American make ok money because USA is a developed and democracy country. Here women go crazy with purse, shoe and clothes because they have money to buy them. If you don't have money to buy something like nice car, you can do payment plan. That way most people can afford them.
When you buy something it make you happy, but after you got it you get bore. It just a waste of money to buy what you want. Not what you need. I go crazy with gadget because I grew up poor in Laos and didn't have much. :o Admin Saovaluck wrote on 5th Apr, 2011 at 7:16am:

If there's a Hi-so and Lo-so...there's got to be a Mi-so, right? :) I think it is just ridiculous how we all label ourselves. This question is for the Admin. When you see someone under dress(not to impress) or a dark skin, hideous looking, etc.. How do you go about treating them? Do you treat them any different? I figure Hi-so and Lo-so is based on Wallet, and even so how do we determine that? I know in America we call Hi-so or wannabe "preps" based on how they speak or treat you.
I noticed during the 25th Sea game ceremony, the announcer Siriphone Southammavong sounded very preppy when she speaks (not normal). However her co-announcer sounded fine. Here's a You tube link for those that know what I'm talking about. Her voice is really annoying. It's funny when she does the news broadcasts she sounded fine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYHWDHyaODc |
Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 6th Apr, 2011 at 9:03am
Hi-So and Lo-So is not always based on "wallet". It's how you act. Some poor girls come from the countryside into the city and act/live like a Hi-So, even though they don't have much money.
We don't treat dark skin people any differently to white skin people. And speaking of white, you look quite white. She does sound annoying, but she is obviously someone who is very educated and she has confidence in public speaking. |

When she was the announcer at the Sea Game I felt embarrass for her. Who talks like that you know what I mean? She's probably been watching too many preppy American teen movies or something and learning from them. :) In regards to my skin. Yes, I'm white. My family members are opposite from me. It must be genetics who knows. When I was younger i was tan, when I got older my skin became sensitive. I tried tanning, but, end up getting burnt or heat rash. |

The term Caucasian race has been used to denote the general physical type of some or all of the populations of Europe, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Asia, Central Asia and South Asia. Historically, the term has been used to describe the entire population of these regions, without regard necessarily to skin tone. In common use, specifically in American English, the term is sometimes restricted to Europeans and other lighter-skinned populations within these areas, and may be considered equivalent to the varying definitions of white people. |

I'm talking about me, but some locals do that too. In western countries, most people probably have their own plate.
I'm willing to have meals on the floor when there's no chairs and tables available especially in the countryside, but I don't like to sit on the floor though. I like to sit on chairs with some cushion, not wooden chairs, but this chair is very innovative. |

Yes, I can just imagine that right now...........you slumped to one side while your legs, tucked behind you, are in the radius of the other. Me, I can eat anywhere. Balancing food on my knees while seated on the couch watching sports is no problem for Yours Truly. But for the sake of my elders (old habits die hard!), who ALWAYS prefer to eat on the floor, that's how we usually eat. Upright with our legs crossed. By the way, I don't think 'willing' is the right word to be used in such a dire predicament. How about substituting 'willing' with, say, 'forced'? That would paint an even clearer picture, don't you think? I don't think that 'chair' is any good for anyone's posture, mate! You might end up with a crooked back! Hunchback style. The chairs adjacent would be of better health value. ;) Are you giving us a glimpse into your castle? Very, VERY nice, indeed. :o |

For me, if I am in my own home, it's always chair and tables for meals. I don't remember the last time I ate on the floor but it was definately a long time ago. But yes, you're right, "forced" to sit on the floor is probably the right word when having meals with others who prefer sit on the floor. You DID mention in a prior post, that you have a large immediate and extended family (I never forget anything nang!). You must own among your possesions a masive table, countless chairs, spoons/forks/knives/plates/bowls/chop sticks etc. To really make your lives less demanding, I'm also assuming that you have a servant or two? All homes have kitchen utensils, regardless of their Hi-So or Lo-So status.
I don't have a servant, I can't afford one but I just use relatives as a servant when I need them. If I need things done such as my clothes washed, I don't do them myself, instead they are sent to a nearby business. You're right, I don't wear those types of casual beach shoes. It's my relatives place. How can it be my place when I just said that I don't like wooden chairs? You'd think I'd have better chairs than those. |

Give me sticky-rice any day of the week, and yes I use my fingers. That is proper etiquette; I can't imagine trying to eat it any other way. Forks, spoons and chopsticks won't do. And forget eating it with power tools, like you would eat spaghetti, it just can't be done.
Oh yea, I think I have consumed more than my share of Johnnie Walker tonight. Sorry for that, and sorry I couldn't share with you all. 29 days to go! |

Masquerading as a Thai tourist might get the job done. That does sound like a bit of prejudice there nang. Doesn't matter though, I'm a big boy and can take a hint. I know when I'm not welcome. ;D |

With som tam, definitely kaow nieow. With gaeng paneng curry, kaow jaow for sure.

You can still eat soup and curry with sticky rice. Use your hands for rice, and spoon for the soup/curry.
This is the 21st century. Maybe you should call our neighbours across the Mekong as Thais, instead of Siamese. |

It's done traditionally for many centuries in Laos.
In "Lo-So" meals, usually there's a bowl of soup in the middle to be shared. Everyone is given a spoon for the soup. |

Don't tell me manes are back in nang.
Flicking through some of my photo albums, I noticed all my male kin used to sport mullets back in the day (25 - 30 years ago). Are they back in? In Auckland - especially in the 'darker' areas of Manukau - 2/3 of the pubaos grow rat tails. Once it's plated and is draped across your shoulder it looks quite 'hot'. |
Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 15th Apr, 2011 at 3:00am
Very few men in Laos have long hair these days. The mullet hairstyle belong in the 80's and that's where it should stay, unless you're a rockstar.

Has this trend spread into Laos yet?
I have already said that about two-thirds guys in Manukau possess one. Pretty 'hot' right? You can be honest nang. Is it hot or not the way it just hangs when it's braided like that. Here's a picture of a guy sporting a rat tail: |

I know the 'Hi-So' like to style their hair this way and that. Comb it here, comb it there. Part it this way, part it that way. Not quite my thing. These guys must take as long as girls just to get prepared for a night out. |

In the rural areas, the inhabitants are classed as, 'Tai ban nork'.
What's the urban equivalent? Are cosmopolitans classed as, 'Tai nai meang'? It sounds right to me. But, maybe I'm wrong. |

Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by Admin Saovaluck on 21st Aug, 2011 at 10:42am
It depends where it's located. Houses in the city of Vientiane are very expensive.
The name of the video is "jennilao thakhek", so if that house is located in Thakhek, which is a rural town in southern Laos, it wouldn't be as expensive compared to houses in the city. |

A house like what?
I can't see a house to give you an estimation. All I can see is one room. I don't know how many rooms there are, and I don't know the size of the house and lawn area. |

Okay then, let's get creative. Let us imagine - using their living room as the prototype of our fantasy - that this is a 3 bedroom home. It has at least 1 garage. (Are there such things in Laos?) It is also in the city, within convenient access to ALL amenities. The house is also closed off with a gate. Like I said earlier today, furnished in a similar decor as Jenny Thakhek's. How much would that cost? |
Title: Re: Hi-so, Lo-so in Laos? Post by Admin Saovaluck on 22nd Aug, 2011 at 3:17am
Well, if you like to imagine things then you might as well imagine the price yourself.
I don't know what the kitchen and bathroom looks like, the size of the house and how spacious is the lawn area, if any. There's too many variables to determine its value, that's why interested buyers go to observe a house, in order to see the whole interior and exterior. The more I think about it, it's probably a business than a house in the video. |

It's not certain that your first video is a home. Your second video doesn't look like a Hi-So home to me.
Carpets are very hard to keep clean in a dusty country like Laos, so the flooring is usually tiles, cement or wood. |
