I mean the excessively loud music to all hours of the night.
|
Title: Re: lao parties Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 25th Mar, 2011 at 3:05am
We tend to get annoyed if loud music is played all night. I'm sure most people feel the same way in other countries.

Hi, mate. There's something you should know about your new host country: Beer and partying go hand-in-hand. A mug of Beer Lao in one hand and a microphone in the other! You should stroll down to the vicinity and 'pop in'. Everybody's invited to Lao parties. You may even be peer pressured into performing your own rendition of the latest hit songs. All good fun when under the influence of alchohol (and/or drugs). Something you can reminisce and laugh off the next day you wake-up all hung over. Then do it all over again! However, if you do reside in laos full time, then I do sympathise. Some of the howling that goes on is akin to a monkeys mating call! No bs. |

I do reside here full time, and what is annoying about parties is the LEVEL they set the amplifiers to. They seem to think that loud in itself is good, the louder the better, and don't seem to notice that levels that are too loud actually distort the sound quality rather than adding to it. That and the really annoying set up of the mikes and amplifiers which seems to go on for ever. I hear it wafting right along the river when there's a party: "Allo.....allo...nung song sam....allo...nung song sam.......(SCREACH!)......Allo...allo...nung song sam....(SCREACH!).....nung song sam.........................(SCREACH!) allo............" ..................and on, and on, and on. |

Yes, we do love our (Siamese) music. ;) We have no problems cranking the stereo decibel levels to capacity! It only sounds distorted from a distance. I can assure you that this isn't the case when heard within the confines of the venue. I'm assuming from your complaint that you're not much of a party-goer yourself. |

You're right, but my wife loves parties. She just held one for local women to celebrate International Women's Day (it's a big day here). I went to bed before the party really got going, but posted some pictures taken of the early party moments and posted them on a forum I visited. One forum member said it looked like a hell of a boring party. You'll probably think the same. Have a look. Early party guests http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=495&pictureid=4453 Starting up the BBQ http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=495&pictureid=4458 Neighbours bring their own poultry to the BBQ. http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=495&pictureid=4459 Have to invite the old ladies, too. http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=495&pictureid=4457 Who let the old man in? http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=495&pictureid=4455 The party guests are having BBQ duck and kao niaw. My wife is cooking up some steak and baked beans for me. I love Laos and its people. The food...................not so much. http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=494&pictureid=4450 I believe the party got quite wild later on. Lots of ten lam, karaoke, etc. |

What photo's? I can't see anything. Maybe I'm blacklisted from that disagreement we had a while back. Since it's an exclusive Women's party, how many times did their 'mating calls' wake you up? You know the one, shot through their throats with abandon after a joke or two. I think it goes something like this: ooohhhwwwwwwwwwwwwww heeeuuuwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!! Once that first howls starts, it's completed collectively IN unison! ;D Baked beans in Laos, of all places? Where do they sell such luxuries? Or do you import? Do your two boy's eat Lao food? Or do they love their baked beans just like their father? |

I can see the photos. What's going on? Administrator (or anyone): Can you see the photos? As a Hong Kong waitress once said to me: "Yu Bleeish guys are the wors.......yu only wanna eat food like your Mummy make!" So I eat a lot of imported food like baked beans. Trouble is - while its cheap food back home, because it's imported, it's an expensive luxury food here. Luckily, a Vientiane bakery has just started making pork pies - they're pretty good too! My boys prefer Lao food. After all, it's what their Mummy makes. |

Title: Re: lao parties Post by Larb Dip on 28th Mar, 2011 at 12:30am
Yes I can see now. YUM! :D
Back home, when attending a birthday party, does the birthday girl/boy EXPECT a present like here in the west? I know back in the day, just turning up and eating their food was enough! |
Title: Re: lao parties Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 28th Mar, 2011 at 1:50am
If you're their neighbour then they don't expect anything from you. They'll invite you to come over for some food and drinks.
Friends usually give gifts, or help out financially with the party such as give some money for a box of beer, or buy a cake. Male friends sometimes share the money for a bottle of whiskey and give that as a gift, but they all drink it together at the party anyway. Females like to receive those stuffed animals as a gift, so they can cuddle up with at night. |

I'm told that the link needs to point to a .jpg image file.
For example, my picture is visible because I have pointed to: http://www.laopride.com/pictures1/lao-party-1.jpg Your picture is not visible because the link below doesn't contain a jpg file: http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=495&pictureid=4453 You can try to post the pictures again, or I can add them for you if you email them to me at: saovaluck_garland@yahoo.com |

I still go there on weekends to give free English classes to local village children. Our house and farm is just along the river from the resort. You can find a printable map to the place, plus lots of other details at: http://rivertimelaos.com/ It's only 30 km. from Vientiane capital. |
Title: Re: lao parties Post by MrLao4ever on 31st Mar, 2011 at 11:41am
Kop jai der for teaching English to the local kids. The resort looks very serene and peaceful to go to. I will be there when I go back to Laos sometime next year. Is it a hotel or bed and breakfast? What river is the resort next to? I can use the map. How's your rock garden going?

It's an ecolodge. It costs from $8 to $38 a night to stay there. They have a floating restaurant, so you can have all meals there. It's on the Nam Ngum river. Rock garden is coming along - just waiting for grass to grow in the gaps between the rocks. Traditional Lao sauna is coming along, too. |

Very simple and nice resort. You are good businessmen and did a good jobs building it Old Man. What about a pontoon, boat rentals business too since it's by the river?

Perhaps you're referring to the possible over crowding that comes along with it. Maybe you just want to hog it al to yourself. :P |

I had a feeling you'd be the sort that likes things like jet skis.... ;) I have bad memories of them. I had a scuba dive shop in Phuket, Thailand many years ago. Out trainee divers would learn scuba by diving in the sea near our restaurant. So jet skis were a danger. Never mind - to counter the danger my partner put up a buoy with a 'diving' flag above where the divers were. Bad move!... :-? That just made the jet ski teenagers notice the flag and head straight towards it and start doing wheelies around it nearly cutting off the heads of our trainee divers.... :o Only people in the scuba diving community know what a 'divers here' flag looks like anyway.... ::) |

How do you spend your days by the way? I really am curious. I'm assuming you have a routine. I already know that you log on at about 0500. Local time. You must really enjoy the quiet life, don't you? To give up all that 'action' over the river, speaks volumes. Maybe it's just age. YOU tell me Old Man. ;) |

I'm amazed about jet skiers not knowing about diving flags...seems to me that people who like jet skiing would also like scuba diving, surfing, etc.
When I got my keelboat sailing license the test asked you to identify different symbols...dive flags were on there. Also Larb Dip, a lot of backpackers go to Vang Vieng where they float down the river on tubes while drinking beer and other interesting concoctions. I can't say I was too impressed with the people I saw wearing Vang Vieng tubing shirts though. |

We have already eavesdropped in regards to the mannerisms of Laos' 'upper class'. Since they're the only REAL people in Laos with any surplus, I don't think it would be a good investment. All that dirt and grime doesn't appeal to some, it seems. Banking on foreigners alone isn't that profitable. You to actually need to be able entice locals who you know will demand an encore, and rush back to hand over their hard-earned.Frequently! I will pass on this oppurtunity. However, please feel free to suggest any other money making schemes that you think up. I will sit here, and select the best. ;) Thanks. :) I was thinking of opening up a PROPER bottle, by the way. None of this siphoning off nonsense they sell on the side of the roads. I can't understand how anybody actually TRUST these vendors. What's stopping them from diluting the liquor with vinegar? Anyway, someone has probably beaten me to the gun here, and killed off all my entrepreneur aspirations. We all know such an embarkment would be major HIT! anywhere AND everywhere in Laos. 8-) |

About 2.5 million tourist a year visited Laos. They're there to spend money. Average Lao worker make $80 a month so they don't have much extra to spend for fun. Jet ski is expensive used one cost $2,000-$6000. Same with pontoon boat.

555, young backpackers. They get really drunk, and do tonnns of drugs. The two most common types of tourists I have seen are these, and old guys on sex vacations. I'm not judging either type for what they do, but the backpackers tend to be more annoying. As far as which country I like better... I've only been to Vientiane for about a week and a half total. But in general I like Lao people/culture more, because the people seem to be friendlier, and also more genuinely friendly (not as many fake friendly people as in Thailand), and the culture is even more laid back than Thailand e.g. I don't have to worry about hi-so wannabes looking down on me for eating som tam and sticky rice with my fingers. That being said, Thailand has nice beaches and islands :D, and for the most part people are really friendly...but it seems like more people are obsessed with money here. This ruins it a little because you have to be very careful of who you trust, because a lot of people just see a farang, and want to get money out of them. I guess the short answer is I don't know, there are things I like about both countries. |
Title: Re: lao parties Post by Lao Democratic on 6th Apr, 2011 at 3:30pm
What you are saying is true JSEA. Most old tourist are sex tourist, young one are there to party and buy cheap drug. About 14 million tourist a year visited Thailand so criminals organization are out there trying to scam tourist. When they see farang they see ATM machine. That's why many farang prefer to live and marry Lao women in Isan.
Laos is laid back and easy going. Life in Laos is quite and simple. Most Lao people are nice and friendly. Some are not. If you want nice suburban live like small US city then Laos is the place. Its developing, crimes is low compare to Bangkok because of small population and culture. 8-) ;) |
