Title: Sending money to Laos
Post by MrLao4ever on 23rd Mar, 2011 at 7:04pm
I would like to help out my relatives in Laos.  I am sure alot of people have done it in the past.  How to? What is involved? Will the total amount of funding be fully put into my relative's hand? Is there a tax invovled by the Lao PDR?

How much are you talking? $1000.00 if hundred or two just send by moneygram or western union.  I sent $500.00 for about $20 fee.  Most of the time I only send hundred or two fee for this is $9 to $10 and they will get it almost instantly.  I prefer MoneyGram. Good luck.

Very easy just go to Walmart, Cub food where they has money gram. You can ask the customer service tell them you want to send money to other country. Fill out form who will receive, what provinces? and your infor. It cost me $10 to send 4,200,000 kip = $600 couple day ago. There is a number on the receipt. Call you relative in Laos, and give them that number on the receipt, they can pick up the money in any provinces in Laos, at any bank in 10 minnute after you send the money.

Thanks for your advice.  No 'special tax' in Laos? Would like to send $500.  Do I need to give them the bank name or financial instution in Laos where the money will go through?-sorry dumb question.

You can also deposit money into someone's Lao bank account over the internet. The bank in your country and Laos will charge a fee though, so not recommended.

We use Walmart to send money to Keo's family. I don't know if there is any fee in Laos to receive the money. I would ask my wife, but she works later than I do.

I think Laos Bank charge 10,000 Kip for $500. That's about $1.25. Bank in the US will charge you $10 = 70,900 Kip.

Western Union is how my parents transfer their funds back home. They never have any problems.

The people in the Hmong village near us all use Western Union.  Their village is small, but they still have a Western Union office.  I think it does quite a lot of business.
