Title: I have questions that I would like answered
Post by Larb Dip on 19th Mar, 2011 at 8:39am
I have a few questions that I would liked answered (Anyone is welcome to answer these questions):

1) When the old timers refer to the younger generation as 'mor nee' or 'mor nun', is it 'safe' to speak of our elders as 'mor nee' or 'mor nun'?

What exactly does 'mor' translate to?

2) Why does 'paa-daek' smell the way it does?
What gives it it's distinct stench?

3) Why do Lao people (women) love to gossip?
Why is gossiping the national sport in the Lao PDR?

4) What does dog taste like? (It would be preferred if this question is answered by people who tasted dog, in Laos).

This is only for starters. More to come as soon as I can think of decent questions to ask. ;D

1) No, it is not safe to speak of olders as "mor nee" or "mor nun".

2) It's fish that has been left out for months, so obviously it will smell bad.

3) It's just the way Lao people are, as long as I don't hear it then it's fine.

4) I've never tasted dog, nor do I want to try, so no comment.

You forgot to answer one question in all your haste:

What is the literal/figurative translation of 'mor'?

Do you participate in the gossip game too, 'nang'?

Title: Re: I have questions that I would like answered
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 19th Mar, 2011 at 9:44am
It's just a way of referring to someone, but a more polite term than calling them "buck nun".

No, I usually don't have time to gossip.

Where do you keep disappearing off to 'nang'?
If you don't mind?

We haven't corresponded like this in a while.

Alright, I have a few more random questions:

1) How does one go about acquiring a harem of mistresses?
Where can one find a squaw more than willing to to be 'the-other' woman?
Is this practice 'ordinary' in Laos?

2) In Laos do they still chop up marijuana and sprinkle it in their dishes with the rest of the other 'vegetables'?

3) How is public affection veiwed by locals?
Does the conservative approached still hold true in the contemporary timeline?

4) What is the REAL reason behind Laos's Poverty?

5) What colour underwear are you wearing?

Stay tuned. More questions to come. ;D

Please have some respect. Other people new to the forum, may read your post and believe that they are typical of other members. If it offends them they may go elsewhere.

I recommended this site on my Facebook page. I have over 100 Lao friends here in the US, Laos and abroad. Stop embarrassing me and yourself.

It seems you want to forgo our truce we had the other day. Am I wrong here mate? If you actually paid attention 'Willy', you would have noticesd that the Admin' has NO problem answering most of my questions (as long as they're not too personal). Maybe that last question is one of the more unconventional that I have posted. Aside for these slight transgressions, all is good.

People actually eat dogs in Laos, 'Willy'.
I have heard of people lacing marijuana with food too, 'Willy'.
I'm not fabricating anything here nor am I coating Laos with a glossy varnish of some sort. What you see is what you get. TELL HIM ADMIN'!

You know nothing about Lao culture 'Willy'! ;D

I do know that you seem to be the your own people's worse enemy. You have NOTHING positive to say about Laos, it's people or it's customs. At least I am trying to embrace it, savor it, and experience it.

The world is not perfect, Laos is not perfect, but that does not give you the privilege of dishonoring their heritage, culture or pass judgement on them.

Yes, by birth you are MORE LAO than I, but by action and word you are less. You need to grow up. I wish that you would go back to your other Asian forum, or did they spank you there also and boot you to the curb.

People like you disgust me. You sit there in your plush lifestyle and belittle others who, don't have it as good as you. Maybe they don't, but maybe they are happy just the same.

My daughter-in-law told my wife the other day, Bill isn't Lao on the outside, but he is Lao inside. That is one of the highest complements I can get from Laotian. Just because you are Lao on the outside, doesn't mean that you have their best interest at heart.

Larb Dip, you are just like a Banana. Yellow on the out side and White in the inside. If you are dislike your heritage..why are you bother joint this forum. I taught my children to respect other, specially the elder! regardless of their skin.   I do blamed your parent for not  teaching you about our culture. Beside,How do you have so much time in your hand to write on most of the post? Do you work? or do you in the welfare system?

I am VERY proud of my heritagre and culture! That's why I ask about the underbelly, the sht that no-one wants to discuss in the light. What are you so ashamed of Tee? That's what being proud is all about: having no shame! Is this not 'Laopride.com' or what?

Why you gotta bring my parents into this? Why can't you just vent your anger towards me?
I was raised right and know the lao customs. What 'elders'?

Why do you keep asking the same redundant questions? Why don't you sift through the back-topics if you REALLY want to know how i get time to 'write on most of the post'. The circumstances haven't nor will they ever! If you can even read, that is.

1) What does 'Looohk manoot' mean? I know 'Looohk' translates to 'world'. What about 'manoot'? I think this has a more figurative than literal.

2) What about 'gum-wehn'?

Title: Re: I have questions that I would like answered
Post by Larb Dip on 17th Apr, 2011 at 8:46am
Above are the questions that I felt you deliberately 'missed'. You can answer now.

1) What does no1 mean?

2) I think I know what no2 means: 'karma', right?
I asked around. Is that right or what? :)

Title: Re: I have questions that I would like answered

1. "Manoot" basically means "people" or "human".
"Loohk manoot" basically means "people of the world" or "human planet".

2. "Gum vehn" basically means "sin".

1) 'Human planet' doesn't sound right! ;D
This is ALWAYS uttered when something DEVIOUS happens. If that helps.

2) Are you sure? I asked one of the older generation. One who actually grew up in Laos. So who's right: him or you? I don't mean to put you on the spot like this but I just want to be sure.

You might be right actually. Doesn't 'bahp' translate to 'karma'?
Maybe 'bahp' and 'gum vehn' are synonyms and are interchangable. Who knows? I certainly don't. YOU tell me. :)

3) I noticed you corrected 'wehn' to 'vehn'. Is the 'w' sound ALWAYS replaced with a 'V' just like the 'R' sound is pronounced as a 'L'? I doubt it because I never hear someone say 'vaow'. 'Waow' is always what I hear when someone says 'talk' in Lao. Isn't the 'v' sound a recent addition brought by the French? You can play teacher and educate me here. :)

"Sin" and "karma" probably means the same thing.

Please ask Lao elders, they know more than me. I'm still young and they always keep reminding me that "I was born yesterday" or "Jaow gert meu varn nee" and I don't know anything.

When I pronounce words, I generally use "V" such as "Vat" and not "Wat" for temples. "W" at the beginning of words probably leans more towards a Thai form of communication because Thai people never say the "V" sound.

Do you say 'waow' or 'vaow'. Please don't lie.
All the O.G's down here utter the former. Obviously since the younger generation are estranged from our motherland, we are influenced by our elders.

YES, WE ALL SAY: 'WAOW', AND NOT 'VAOW'.

Title: Re: I have questions that I would like answered

I always say "vaow" when I speak naturally.

Look, at the end of  the day, everybody will understand if you say "waow" or "vaow".

No they're NOT synonymous! 'Sin' means to transgress on a divine law. 'Karma' is more like 'what goes around comes around'. You, of all people, should know!

What are you hinting at now? Are you not qualified for the job?

Maybe I should have used a hyphen instead of a apostrophe for the punctuation.

1) What's the difference between itsaa and sa-on? I know there's a difference; i just don't know what it is.

By the way, is 'itsaa' really pronounced with the 't'? I keep hearing 'isaa'. No 't' sound. :)

2) When you call someone 'Eedaa' and "Eeniy' is it rude? Do those titles respectively translate to  'Mister' and 'Mrs'?

The term "Ex Member" means that the person has resigned as a member of Lao Pride, by their own choice.

You go to the User Control Panel to delete your account from Lao Pride, then you will be displayed as an "Ex Member".

But be warned that once you remove yourself, you can no longer login. And you can't get your account back either.

The only option is to register for a new account.
