100% agree.  Any job in Laos is for Lao people.  PLus there is a law set forth already for foreign investment company that you have to hire 90% of your working population to be Laotian.  For example, if your company has 10 personnels then 9 of those should be Laotian.

The problem is foreign company bring their own worker. Government should required them to hired at least 50% of Lao worker. Most investment about 80% is in mining sector. Which doesn't benefit the people directly and damage the environment.
:-? ::)

There's no problem with 'investors' bringing SKILLED workers into the country. If it's a job we can do, then we should be offered the employment first. We don't want other people coming in and turning us into slaves in our own land, and all we can do is pick a spot out in the sun and take 'naps' out of despair. That's riot recipe!

Good point. Not all jobs require skilled labors. Maybe it just an excuse to screw us and not hire Lao workforces. Chinese has 1.3 billion people, Vietnam 90 million. They going to care about their own people, and family first before Lao.

Look at Arab riot and protest because people are poor and struggle to survive. While rich government elite and their crony are living large.
>:( :(

It wouldn't be pretty if one million angry Lao people protest and demand change in That Luang like the Arab world. But Lao people like to live a simple life and don't want any trouble.
:D

This 'simple' mentality is what is KILLING us at the moment. Lao are indeed friendly and loving creatures. No doubt about that. But this mindset needs to change. Not everybody out there adheres to kinship like we do. Most people are out for themselves. People can only persevere so much. Look at the red shirts across the river, didn't they riot out of impatience and discrimination? Are they not Lao? PEOPLE CAN ONLY PERSEVERE SO MUCH!

That's true. Lao people are too nice and "simple" mentality. Maybe that's why we got kick around, invaded, control and exploit by our powerful neighbor for century till now. Thai, French, Vietnam all screw us up.

Maybe we should return the karma and 'screw' them 'up'. But, no. That's not the Lao modus operandi, is it? Hold all your heads up high 'pi-nong', for we were raised better! ;)

I speak a little bit of Thai pretty well (so...small vocabulary, but pretty good with tones), and I know a few words in Lao. I can read and write Thai a little too. I memorized the Lao alphabet at one point, but since I never use it I've forgotten most of it (I can spot the words beer and Lao from a mile away though :D ).

I like Thailand and Laos more than the USA, I really don't want to go back now (I've visited Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, currently living in Bangkok).

Lao and Thai language are very similar. If you can understand Thai you can speak Lao. What kind of work you do in Bangkok? If you don't mind me asking. I never been to Bangkok before, but its very nice city and opportunity. Many Lao also live and work there. There's more Lao living in Thailand then in Laos.

Just teaching right now. I was hoping to find something in IT, but no luck so far. I like Bangkok, but it is not fun to get around if you have to go somewhere that isn't near the Skytrain, subway, or river. Traffic is terrible here. On the other hand there's tons of stuff to do here since it's a major world city.

In Laos 'Foh lang' specifically translates to 'French'.
'Foreigners' are referred to as 'khon-tang-pa-thet'.

In Siam I have noticed that 'Foh-lang' translates to 'foreigner'. Even the black tourists call themselves 'Foh-lang'.

Laos is a lay back, easy going country. Like American suburban. Bangkok is big city with 11 million people. I like small city where I live the population is less then 30,000 people. More people  also mean more pollution, traffic jam and more crimes.
::)
