Title: Great Lao-American singer Post by Baleno on 24th Sep, 2010 at 9:51am
Hi music lovers,
Came across an interesting "You Tube" site for Dara Ounaphom. A young Lao American singer that has great potential. This URL: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=09darli&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_857536, will take you to her site where you can see her and listen to (free) many of the songs that she has recorded. If Laos had a programme "Laos Has Talent", Dara O should be a top contender. Hope, like me, you enjoy her singing talent and she would be a great representative of "Lao Pride". Happy listening, Baleno |

She sings with a fluent American English voice. I wouldn't have guessed that she is a Lao person if I heard it on radio or something.
We have singing contests in Laos every now and then, but the singers are Lao citizens and they sing Lao music, so she probably wouldn't make the cut. |

She sound great thank for sharing. If Laos were giving more opportunity like American. Let say give Lao people good education, healthcare, and good paying job, making $2500 a month instead of $100 for example. More Lao people will be successful too and well known worldwide. We has many best and brightest too. Government only allow modern music about 12 year ago. What happen if they didn't allow. Will there be Cells, Alexandra, Aluna, LOG, Sam.

If a business makes $1,000 profit a month, and they paid their worker $2,500 a month, they will go bankrupt.
Employing a person for $100 month will still get the job done, and employers know that. The person can do just as well as someone who demands a higher wage. |

I'm just saying if Laos is wealthy like American, Singapore or Japan, then Laos can pay their worker more. American pay some of their worker $2500 a month plus benefits 401k, holiday pay, medical, vacation hrs because the company might make $30 million profits. The more you pay the worker the better for the economy. If people make more they'll spend more. In US company can't pay worker less then $6.25 an hrs. it's the law and people will protest, speak out and go on strike to demand better pay. |

In the US even $2,500-$3,000 a month, still might not be enough for some people. You got house payment, car payment, buy new TV, shopping and so on. When it come to money it's never enough. But if company don't have to pay you more they won't. It only mean more profits in their pocket. In the old day people in America were working 12 hrs day with little pay, and no benefits. Until worker organized union and demand better pay, benefits and better working condition. I think it's somewhere in 1920. If company has their way they'll not pay us at all, and work us to death like the old day slavery. |

If people in Laos start earning figures like America, Singapore and Japan , there will be changes in the consumer price index. Goods and services will become more expensive, the poor will suffer further, and tourists will opt to stay in cheaper destinations such as Thailand and Vietnam.
In Laos, people are not overworked like many countries. It's good that in America, workers can demand better pay unlike the olden day slavery. A company won't listen to one voice though, you need a large group to get involved. |

Inflation. No problem here government policy, education, big business, customer buying power keep the economies going. That's why China, Vietnam become sucessful they are capitalist socialist. Supply and demand. If people has more buying power they'll spend more. Company then need to hire more worker making those good. It keep the economies rolling. Good and service might be expansive in America, but people also has many choice if they want to buy $50,000 house or $500,000. A $15,000 car or $100,000 car. People get in finacial problem here because spend more then they make, and buy something they can't afford. People go where there is jobs and opportunity. Nobody want to be poor. That's why many young Lao go work in Thailand cause the pay more. That's why million and million around the world want to come live in US, Japan or Singapore. If Japan, Singapore, US, EU give Lao poeple visa and tell them you can get good health care, education and make $50,000 a year working here. I bet you 6 million out of 6.8 million people in Laos will take the offer. Will you take the offer? |

Many people in Laos have families, and old people enjoy the traditional lifestyle of Laos.
Some people want go overseas short term just for the experience and money, but they probably don't want to stay there forever. Lao people who go to work in Thailand don't stay there forever. They come and go because it's very easy to travel between Laos and Thailand, they also miss their families in Laos. |

If government created opportunity for the people. Then Lao people don't have to go oversea or Thailand to look for better paying jobs. Many young people end up becoming a victim of human traffic, and force to work as prostitution. Foreign company bring their own worker instead of hiring Lao worker, there is also around hundred thousand illegal worker in Laos steal jobs from Lao people. Government should do something about that.

There are good paying jobs in Laos, but you need to have the relevant skills. If you have skills with computers then many computer shops will want to employ you.
Some girls become victims of human trafficking, but most girls choose to become prostitutes on their own terms because they don't have any skills, or they don't want to work in low skilled jobs. There are illegal workers everywhere, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia are all in the same boat. The Government is probably trying to crack down on them. Lets hope so. |

How much does good paying jobs pay in Laos? Unskill worker make about $100, that's not even enough to buy gas to go work.
Thailand, Cambodia crack down on illegal worker. Laos with only 6.8 million poeople. If hundred of thousand jobs go to illegal immigrant that's mean there is not much jobs available left for Lao people. |
Title: Re: Great Lao-American singer Post by LAOS on 29th Sep, 2010 at 8:38pm
Laos should become democracy like Cambodia or Thailand so there will be more jobs, and opportunity for lao people.

I see many vehicles on the road, so obviously people have enough money to buy gas/petrol.
Some people who work in marketing, IT, and banks earn about $400 US a month. There are jobs for Lao people, but whether they are willing to do it is another matter. |

With $2,200 GDP a year few people in Laos can afford new car. Don't get me wrong I also have relative in Laos who are bussiness owner and wealthy. Japan GDP is $41,000, Singapore is $52,000 a year. I just want to see peace and prosperity in Laos.

Title: Re: Great Lao-American singer Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 30th Sep, 2010 at 12:43am
Most people in Laos don't really need a car. The cities are small and the roads are narrow. It's easier to get around on a motorbike, and there's plenty of parking space.

Everybody need, and want a car if they can afford it. Motorbike is affordable, but can be dangerous.

Title: Re: Great Lao-American singer Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 30th Sep, 2010 at 4:51am
I disagree. If everyone in Laos was given $10,000 for free, most people won't buy a car with that money.
Instead they will use the money towards something else such as opening up a business, buy property or farm equipment. A car is not high on the list of many Lao people's priorities. |
Title: Re: Great Lao-American singer Post by LAOS on 30th Sep, 2010 at 4:12pm
You make a good point. Bussiness need transportation. If Laos become a democracy country, and Lao people make $10,000 a year instead of $2,200. People will buy everything, car, house, motorbike, open business and so on. I hope Lao government can make Laos wealthy, and developed like Singapore
GDP in America is $46,000 a year. Out of 500,000 Lao people that live here about 95% own a car. And I see lot of Lao people drive a nice expensive car BMW, Lexus, Bens, Honda, toyota. Vietnam is a good friends and allies. Maybe they can give us Lao people $10,000 each. |

Back to the original post, she's not that great of a singer. She still sounds untrained and amateur. She has a nice voice and certainly have potential, but with all the astounding singers on youtube, they have too much competition to have such flaws. Additionally, she says "I'm Laos." If the girl doesn't even know the proper term for her ethnicity is, I suspect she wouldn't be a good candidate as a Lao representative. And I don't think she's that attractive either... |
Title: Re: Great Lao-American singer Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 8th Oct, 2010 at 6:00am
She is giving it a go. She can probably represent the Lao-American population at best, because she is still considered an outsider or "Lao nork".
And yes, Laos is a country but not an ethnic group. http://www.laogirls.com/what-is-the-difference-between-lao-and-laos.html |
