Title: Do you think dual citizens is  a good idea in Laos
Post by Lao Lan Xang on 21st Aug, 2010 at 6:45pm
Do the government already have this policy or working on it? I know Lao government is trying to pass policy to make it easier for Lao expats to move back, visit,  buy land, invest or live in Laos. It would great if they have something like that in the future like US, EU, Australia, Japan, Canadian dual citizensship.

I don't think it will work for Laos since Laos is a socialist state, and the principle of socialism is about "equality". Having a dual citizenship means that you will have more advantages. There's nothing to stop Lao expats from becoming a Lao citizen, but you need to give up your other citizenship.

Dual citiznship is a great way to encourage Lao expats to move back, invest and help build the country. I do like the 9 month stay tourist visa for Lao expats.

Laos is a Socialist for now. Socialism only look good on paper, and proving time and time again it doesn't work in the real world. Even Russia abandon Socialist. China, Laos and Vietnam are becoming Capitalist Socialist. In the history of mankind no civilization ever succeed in creating socialist utopia. There's alway inequality, injustice, humane suffering, war and conflict.

Can Lao people in Issan become Laos citizens? They're Lao 100% or 99%.

Issan people can become Lao citizens if they choose to. Their ethnicity is irrelevant, they still need to apply for Lao citizenship since they are Thai citizens.

That's good to hear that Lao Issan can become Laos citizens if they want. I didn't know that before. That a good idea if Lao government want to increase Laos  population in the future. I think they should encourage Lao worldwide to move back to Laos, Lao expats, Lao  Issan, Lao in Burma, Lao in Sipsongppana, China, Lao in Vietnam or Lao in Cambodia. So we don't become a minority in our own land and a second class citizens in the future. When Laos become a Democracy states, economics and population will also boom. Its humane nature people go where there is jobs and opportunity. I'm not a politicians. I understand its easier saids then done. But it can be done by those in authority of power." Long live Laos Lan Xang."

Don't they have some sort of I.D. card - or some sort of thing akin to that - where citizens and residents are obliged to keep on their bodies when out in public?

What about in Laos?

What would be the process and advantages of becoming a Lao Citizen?

The process is you have to have lived here for at least ten years.

The advantage is you would be legally allowed to own land.

Okay, considering I retire at 60 or so... I would be 70 before I could own land! Holy Swiss Cheese! I have to rethink this retirement factor. Owning land is a good thing, but I suppose if we retire in Laos I will be content to keep the land in Keo's name.

If your love and trust in Keo is as deep as you say, then there's no problem there.

Hasn't been for me.

The question would be - How can Dual citizenship benefits Laos?

It is a good idea for anyone abroad to obtain a dual citizenship of USA/Laos, France/Laos, Australia/Laos and so on ...... because of the flebilities to live or work in between countries mainly with less hassle and paperworks to deal with.   I think dual citizenship will also benefit Laos greatly because the idea opens up and makes easier for high quality individuals to bring in fresh/latest and greatest concepts to Laos and modernizing Laos at a faster rate.

Simple answers "socialism, communism." We are lucky that Lao government open up the country and encourage foreign investment, they fought to keep out in 1975. Look at North Korea and Cuba.

I just hope Lao government crackdown on the 200,000 illegal foreigner worker in Laos, who's stealing jobs from the locals ASAP. And make them register for a work permit.

Cracking down illegals would be extremely challenging because the process requires lotsa money and man hours.

Here's a question:

How do these 'Illegals' get into the country in the first place?

Title: Re: Do you think dual citizens is  a good idea in Laos
Post by Lao LXE on 4th May, 2011 at 11:38pm
Some just come right in. Some company also bring their own worker and they overstay their visa. Laos population is only 7 million so 200,000 illegal is crazy. Government say they're trying to crackdown.
>:(
