Drinking beer socially with friends is considered normal for Lao men and women.
But when middle-aged Lao women tries to act young again and goes over the top with their drinking and dancing, it's not a pretty sight for the conservative Laotians. |

Same here in the US everybody want to have fun. Many night club, bar, and casino. Sometime too much fun and temptation here. But you have to know your limit or you will be lost. It's like jungle out here.

Lan Xang, It's just fun her style. None of the guys beside her seems interested, usually when you're having fun everyone goes with the flow.
USA Joe, I know her and she is the type of person that is "khon sabai, sabai", meaning she doesn't take life too seriously. She may give me a slap on the bum for saying negative things about her, but we will just laugh it off. |

When you drink beer and get buzz. That's when the fun began. Thai said "Mai pen rai."

USA Joe, Actually foreign beers are allowed in Laos. Carlsberg and Heineken beers for example are sold in the country.
Almost every beer-drinking tourist prefer beer that is made in Laos since they want to try something different. |
Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Lan Xang on 10th Aug, 2010 at 11:19pm
That true beerlao is the best selling beer in Laos. Because Lao people, tourist prefer beerlao. They're selling it international because tourist ask for them.

Good question. I'm not sure in Laos, but most young kids don't drink because they dont have lot of money. If they got money they probably spend on something else. Like snack and candy. |
Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 11th Aug, 2010 at 11:03pm
USA Joe, There is no minimum drinking age, or purchase age in Laos, so anyone can legally drink or be in possession of alcohol.
But as Lao Lan Xang has mentioned, you wouldn't find many Lao kids drinking since they have no money, and also Lao parents like to supervise and control their kids. Lao people are usually sensible with their drinking, if they get drunk they'll keep to themselves like the lady dancing alone on the first page. It's rare to see any alcohol-fuelled violence, and that's the beauty of this country. |

Laos culture is very conservative. Parent teach their children with morals and to respect other very well. I grew up poor in Laos. When I have money at age 11 yrs old. The first think I think about is buying some snack, and some candy. Not ciggerret or beer. But few do drink and smoke. |
Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Lan Xang on 12th Aug, 2010 at 3:11am
But the government should regulate and let people buy alcohol, and smoke at 18 yrs or older.

Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 12th Aug, 2010 at 4:07am
Lao Lan Xang, Government regulation won't stop anything, teenagers will still buy alcohol and cigarettes if they really want to. And businesses will provide them because it's about profit.
Just like the new compulsory helmet law. Many people do not care about it, and still continue to ride their motorbikes without a helmet. |

well i dont really care if people refuse to wear helmet. its their head getting split open when they crash. i do get annoyed when a drunk teen/kid causes an accident with his/her motobike because there is no law against under-age drinking and spare me the preach about how lao family will regulate their kids not to drink, that they are responsible and good little boy and girl who only wants candy and soda pop. |
Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 12th Aug, 2010 at 8:51am
USA Joe, Foreigners are always at fault in a vehicle accident in Laos, so it doesn't matter if a drunken kid or elderly person gave you a few broken bones, you will need to pay up.

Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 12th Aug, 2010 at 11:39pm
Even those who don't drink can drive dangerously because vehicles don't travel in an orderly fashion in Laos, they are all over the place.
So yes, if you're a foreigner then it's wise to take a taxi, bus or jumbo. As a passenger, you're not responsible in accidents. |

Yes, although the traffic conditions in Laos is not as bad as Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia because our cities are alot smaller.

Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 13th Aug, 2010 at 5:25am
USA Joe, If an accident involved drunken Lao youths then their age comes into play, whether they are legal to ride/drive. Then they investigate who caused the accident.
In a worst case scenario, that is if some gets killed as a result of a road accident, the rider/driver of the other vehicle must spend some time in jail by law, even if he/she didn't cause the accident. Why don't you buy things? Even if they cheat you for 10 cents over the actual price, there's no harm done. |

Lol. Only in lao will people cheat you and tell you there is no harm in doing it. Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 13th Aug, 2010 at 6:45am
USA Joe, The vendor cheats on everyone, including the locals. They alway try to make as much profit as they can, so you have to bargain. That's part of life in Laos.
If you and I bought the same item, you may have got it at a cheaper price because you negotiated with them better than I did. |

Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 13th Aug, 2010 at 8:32am
USA Joe, Fair or not fair is not the issue. Their product/service, they have the right to sell it for any price they wish.
Laos is not everyone's cup of tea. If Laos seems so primitive then maybe you need to rule it out as your next travel destination. |
Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Lan Xang on 13th Aug, 2010 at 1:49pm
That's how business work. Make as much profits as you can. In Laos you have to negotiate the price and don't let people know you are tourist. Same problem in Thailand and Cambodia." Life is not fair".

Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Lan Xang on 13th Aug, 2010 at 10:18pm
USA Joe. In US you pay what ever they tell you, no negotiating on prices that mean if they want to over charge you or rips you off you are stuck and have to pay up.
;D |
Title: Re: Beer is a way of life in Laos Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 13th Aug, 2010 at 11:11pm
Lao Lan Xang, You have a good point regarding the pricing in Thailand and the US.
USA Joe, I didn't miss anything. I am well aware of your rights as a buyer, but please don't go walking away believing that they cheated on you due to being a foreigner because we are all in the same boat, and it comes down to how well you negotiate. Some places in Laos have fixed prices, such as a small supermarket. I'm sure that if I visited the USA, certain situations will seem crazy and unfair to me. It's called "culture shock", and that's what you will be experiencing in Laos. And by the way, I hope that picture of you in a Buddhist monk robe is just a rehearsal because beard and earrings are not allowed. |

Most part in the US the price is set fairy at the retail store. I agree you can alway take your business somewhere else. Same as in Laos if the prices is not right you can alway walk and go to different place. USA Joe say "everyone gets the same price regardless of age/sex/race/beauty." Yes most of the time. But sometime people do get rips off too. There are flaw of course. I live in the US for over 20 year. I know how the system work. For example if you are women who doesn't know much about car repair . When you bring your car to an auto shop. I can guarantee you some shop will over charge you more then men. Who might know more about car. I have friends who own auto shop. Many business also get fine for ripping off customer all the time. I personally have been rips off before. Couple of week ago I try to get new engine for my truck. The mechanics want $1400 for part and labors. I try to negotiate the prices down to $1200. The shop wouldn't even call back. I ask around at different shop some want $1100, some want $1900. |

you are comparing oranges to apple. in usa mechanics are not allow to charge differentprices to different people. for example john and mary buys the same tire from mechanic for same price. however, if mary doest know her tire just has low air and does not need a new tire, that is mary's own fault, not the mechanic. nor is the mechanic doing unlawful by selling a new tire (which sells at same price for everyone) now on your example, i bet the parts have same price which, is the law, but the labor can be different prices. i like how you dont include those information in your post, so that people think you are making a good point, when in fact, you just do so that it makes you look smart. fail try |
