Title: What I like about Lao.....
Post by USA Joe on 8th Jul, 2010 at 10:45pm
I had some random thought about Lao. So here are my five observations. Please feel free to add yours to list. But be nice. These are all in fun nature.

1. In the summer time u turn very dark (almost black).
2. You or someone close to you has a Lao nickname of "short, fat, skinny....etc."
3. has black & white photo with old family members looking very unhappy
4. loves to sit on floor and eat sticky rice
5. has a grandma who loves Keaw Mack but can't see well and misses spitting into the bucket

Number two is so true. Hum (Pen!s), Lah (Dark skin), Kah (Jungle person), Nguen (Money), Kum (Gold), Phet (Diamond), Van (Ring) are also common Lao nicknames.

Number three is quite interesting. I notice they tend not to smile when looking through old photo albums of other Lao people. That's not the case with my family though, we look happy and bubbly.

I just can't resist to answer your questions (no offence just kidding)

1. you're wearing sunglasses every one you see is darker, try a green or red pair, you'll see vegis or roasted pigs.
2. We all have nick names, real name just for strangers and we make it hard to remember.
3. Just think of the fee the photographer charged how can you smile pics are very expensive then. ( I think if you don't look serious then you're not respectful, those are the thinking of the old days).
4. They would be a lot happier if you take them to restaurant and have a banquet. ( In old days, when material is scarce, you're lucky to have sticky rice, they're happy cause they don't have to worry about the tax and insurance they have to pay like us).
5. When grandpa pee, he missed the bowl and make a mess too, when you get older you will understand.

Longhang, Yes it's sad to say that some people eat dogs and cats in Laos, usually among the beer-drinking jumbo and tuk tuk drivers, and Vietnamese labourers. Our neighbouring countries eat them too.

I've never heard of anyone with 'Nguen' as a nickname before. The most popular name I've come across is 'Kham' (kum). That name is EVERYWHERE!

There are plenty of Lao people with the nickname "Nguen".

I've also seen people with the nickname "Kip".

Many new generation of parents in Laos are beginning to name their kids "Dollar", because they love those dollars.

It's ridiculous if you ask me.

I've seen two kids with the nickname "Dollar". When they grow older, their friends might pick on them.

I've never come across anyone so called 'Ngeun'.

Really? There should be other supstitous nicknames as: 'Don' (Dollar), or 'Cen' (Cent) right? ;D

Maybe you misheard. Maybe the actual name was 'Dara' (star in Pali) right? ;)

Okay I will ask: Why?

Title: Re: What I like about Lao.....

No, their name is "Dollar".

Well, it's ridiculous, don't ask why. Even westerners don't call their kids "Dollar".

You DID ask to be asked. Now you owe me an answer.

'Dollar', has 2 syllables. That's one too many!

What's YOUR nickname nang? :)

Larb Dip, maybe you should show yourself first and then Admins may decide to do the same ;D.  You too definitely are soul-mates ;D.

Hasn't he shown himself yet?

If not, he should definitely do so before insisting Admin do the same.

I've shown myself but I can understand Admin, being a 50-year old, bald Lao-Canadian gay man, being reluctant to do so.

What on Earth would that do to Larb Dip's internet masturbation fantasies?
