Title: Lao snacks
Post by Lao Pride Administrator on 10th Jun, 2010 at 8:56am
"Yam" small octopus and fried cricket are snacks or an entree, eaten primarily by men who like to drink alcohol.

It's not rare to see Lao men who enjoy alcohol.  ;D

I used to eat octopus, it's quite good, i like these we can find with street- sellers, which is dried. So good.

But i did not tried the insect.

Thanks for the pictures.

Badlikeme, It's a "cricket" as mentioned in my original post.

Grasshoppers are similar, and can be fried as well.

That's the Lao way. Whenever there is gaang (soup) served, everyone has is issued with a separate spoon, but everyone sips from the same bowl. No bs!

What about a Lao wedding? I have seen many videos where everyone takes a shot from the same glass, no one seems to object.

I try that one it does taste good like chicken. Will not try that again. Me and friends catch them in the rice field when I was a kids and make a snake soup. I like fried bugs better.

Yes my Old Man always told me snakes like to hide in the rice fields. He would go hunting with his machete and stack them up in a corner, then gather them at the end of the day and take them home for tea.

Fried bugs?

They do look like crickets(Mang ji lau) but I doubt it.  As a kid we call it "Mang ji Nai" looks like a cricket but it is not.  It's from the same family.  They still sell it here in the states, all canned product.

So you're a city boy (like the Admin',. Maybe you two are related ;)).

I already told you I'm from Vientiane. I'm from Hadxaifong district. I forgot the name of the ban, but there's a old school song about how the Mekong river always overflows and floods the Village. It's still being covered by aspiring artists today!

I left Laos at age 11 and don't remember all the name of the town, and county. I'm a city boy, but also had experience farming when I live with a relative.

In the cities, are they still considered ban? Is the city associated with a village or not?

Maybe not safe to eat bug here because of too much chemical and pollution. In river, Lake they said don't eat fish more then 3 time a week because of mercury.

You know what, some of these heartless locals think it's okay to eat them, because they say they didn't kill them.

Doesn't matter. Food is food. Don't cows/chickens/pigs etc. have to be slaughtered too. Let our pinong eat in peace. Who are we to judge? Who knows, some time soon, maybe dogs and cats will become part of the national dish like other Viet dishes have, i.e fur.

CAN THOSE VIET'S COOK, OR WHAT! ;D

Seems like you think it's okay.

Cows, chickens, pigs etc are different because they are not raised as pets.

Dogs and cats are considered a girls/guys best friend.

It's only okay with me because it doesn't affect me in any way shape or form. As long as they're not 'doorstepping' their main source of protein, then I don't really care. Nor should anyone else.

I wouldn't mind actually, tasting dog/cat just to see what all the hype is about. No bs.

Remember Cats and Dogs have many diseases/viruses, they are not clean.  You don't know what's injected into them.  I would stay away to be safe. :)

LaoCowboy, It's alcohol. You don't eat the reptiles (unless you're dying of hunger), they are only pickled to enhance the flavour of the whiskey.

Larb Dip, I don't know how much for a bottle, I've never bought one before.
