That's pretty cool. My sister could weave bamboo and wicker. I now wish I had watched a little more closely.

I'm quite adamant that eveRybody in Laos at at least 5 sticky rice baskets sitting in their pantries. Judging from the posture of the lady in the hat, I don't think the day has been as productive as she would have liked. Do these ladies really make any money selling sticky rice baskets?
EVERYBODY IN LAOS SHOULD ALREADY HAVE ONE. ;D |

They make money selling sticky rice baskets, but not much.
While it's true that everybody in Laos have one, nothing last forever. It goes old and worn out, and need to be replaced with a new one, just like kitchen appliances and everything else. |

How do they 'paint' them?
What chemical gives the rice baskets their different hues? |

It depends on the size of it, the blue one pictured above costs 3,000 kip (40c US). Yes, it takes time to make, for very little profit.

If you charge too much, no one will buy them from you. You can buy sticky rice baskets at low prices anywhere in Laos.
It does take skill and a lot of work, because it takes up to a week to get them done. |
